Exemplar

When I read about Jessica’s first day, I really felt for her. Being thrown into care with no real introduction or support is tough, especially with someone like Mr. Anderson who has dementia and specific needs. I noticed right away that the situation wasn’t just about following instructions, it was about understanding the person behind the care.

Jessica’s first attempt didn’t go well, and that makes sense. Mr. Anderson was confused and anxious, and she didn’t know his preferences yet. Once she learned he liked jazz, the mood shifted. That really stood out to me. Knowing personal preferences can help de-escalate tough moments. I’ve seen that happen before in real care settings.

What really stuck with me was how Jessica forgot to document. I get it. She was overwhelmed. But skipping documentation could mean the next person won’t know what worked. That’s where the risk is. I learned that documentation isn’t just paperwork, it’s communication. It connects everyone involved in the resident’s care.

Here’s what I would do differently:

After the interaction, I would take a minute to jot down the key points. What happened, what I did, and what worked.

I would use clear, respectful language. Something like: “Resident refused assistance, appearing visibly agitated. Jazz music was introduced as a calming strategy. Resident accepted limited assistance after music was played.”

I’d also check in with myself emotionally, but I’d make sure to stay neutral in the way I write things down.

What I’m taking away from this:

This situation helped me see that digital tools like PointClickCare aren’t just forms. They are part of how we share what works, protect our residents, and support each other on the floor.

I strongly believe the use of technology is very important in healthcare. It helps with accuracy an finishes tasks in a more productive and timely manner. I also believe that technology and healthcare helps us enable and utilizes interprofessional practice in our practice period although information technologies in healthcare also lead to data breaches and can violate health care information protection acts.

Watching this scenario, it would have been helpful for Jessica to have access to the digital files to review the care plan, special considerations suvh as offering music via the Ipad, what has been effective or not for this resident in the past, to better approach the resident. Digital tools are helpful in many ways with regards to care, such as access to a consistently documented care plan, but it also requires time just as paper charting, to document thoroughly and correctly. Digital tools I believe make documenting care more accessible, but like all documentation, needs to be completed at time of care and time and space to allow for it's completion.
