1st Lesson
I have learned about the importance of PBL. The pros and cons with working with different types of people. Problem based learning which gives us more freedom to do our own researches for the question. It also requires us to have a level of self-discipline. From reflecting on the previous PBL module, i realized that different people can affect the group, both good and bad. Some of my previous teammates do stuff very last minute which gives unnecessary anxiety. But i also learned to work around it.

I also learned about passive design, occupant comfort, Long term/ Durability and what is sustainable design

2nd lesson
On the second lesson, we learnt about the different steps to analysing a site.
The first is site analysis which was to look at the climate , sun path, wind direction etc.
The second was called zoning which was to make bubble diagrams to understand the purpose of the building and where are the entranced etc.
The third was concept design which was to look at the accessibility of the site and the different options for passive cooling for the building.
The fourth was scheme design which was to start getting into the different details of the building and the materials that are required.
The fifth is design development which is the building of the building

I learn the importance of sustainability how it affects the building, environment and the consumers.

In sustainable design we have the pros and cons where the pros of sustainability includes the passive design of the building like how the building is constructed to have wind flow and natural day-lighting basically the orientation of the building.

How innovative ideas can affect the performance of the building like the IAQ of the building, energy savings features and the quality of life of consumers.

Second Lesson:
SITE Analysis:

Check the climate so as to know what type of building materials are need to survive in the type
of climate the site experiences.
Determine the direction of the sun/ sun path: angle of the sun tells you about the location of the site.

Wind speed ->prevailing wind direction: where the wind coming form most of the time.

Existing Buildings: check whether it is stable soil, plumbing.

Existing -> Brown Field
New -> Green Field

site surrounding:
Greenery: shelters/drop-off

Site Accessibility:transportation-> bus tops
easy access for pedestrians?

Views: for people to see
drainage should not affect/pollute near reservoirs.

program assessment: plan spaces what gonna build.
Bubbles: relationship between spaces whats important, not important.
shape of bubble does not mater to show approx area.
Maybe landmark can be star.

Bigger bubbles means bigger importance of the space?

Site planning:

Resources and Interior:

building materials found in the site so no additional fees needed to transport and buy
foreign material

Available water sources/plumbing, cooling towers and electricity paths so as to not
create new ones so as to not disrupt the site surroundings.

WEEK 1
Because of PBL I have learned something new of the many ways of sustainable design. Through group discussion we also share creative idea of what we have learned, and brainstorm with the team to share our ideas, to further improve and achieve better sustainable design. PBL plays a very big part in our future career, as it requires critical thinking. With PBL it helps to us to have faster thinking and better solution.

The learning outcome from previous lesson is to understanding the meaning of PBL. What is the differences between the one we learned during last semester and this semester. Furthermore, We as a class did reflect some of the module that might appear in this module. Basically like for e.g. Solar Analysis, CFD which we have learnt at GBMODSIM, Revit - BIMCO. Referring to the LMS, there is a stages of PBL Process which include Climate Setting for stages 1, Problem Inquiry for stage 3 which seems that it gonna be my first attempt

Thursday:

In this lesson, i have a chance in understanding the stages of green building concept design such as Site Analysis, Program Assessment, Porosity & Passive Design, Envelope Design. Each of the stages include its definition, important facts and what are the thing, we need to clearly verify before we start planning and go for site visit.

The PBL journey for me was rewarding and stressful. Rewarding as i got to find out more about SFM like the different modules and how you can increase the points for buildings to help with the score for the green building criteria. But of course different teams have different personalities which can either be easy or difficult to handle. We were able to communicate properly but a lot of things that they did was quite last minute. I feel like the one thing i should have done was make a timeline of when we should have finished.

1st Lesson

When doing case study, I realise that the use of diagrams are useful when explaining the passive designs and etc of a site so that we can understand fully.

Respect for buildings surrounding the site especially if its located in a historic area is important. A form of respect is to create a building which blends itself with the historic style that the surrounding buildings has. For example would be the height, colour scheme and material used.

Another thing I realise from my teams case study is the word windbreaker. As the climate of the case study site is hot and dry, frequent sandstorm may be experienced. So with trees acting as the windbreaker for the site will reduce wind speeds/ change the direction of the wind.

Take, for example, a windbreaker. What is the effect of windbreaker on the building, what will it do, or what will happen when there's no opening at the site to conclude windbreaker? Furthermore, it is crucial to highlight and explain how the fluid/water flow in the irrigation and whether or not there is a slope for the water to flow to the building itself.

Next, in contexts of my teammate, they have made a conscious effort to explain more about his\her individual part. Even though longitude and latitude are not specified under site location, one of us suggests to include them in our checklist. Its purpose is to tell us precisely where the building or site is located.
