Melcom is a major retail chain in Ghana with a difference as it sells virtually everything including phones, laptops, and home appliances. It was formed by Indian businessman Bhagwan Khubchandani and its effective operation commenced in Ghana in 1989. The first Melcom store was located in Accra and, over the past few years, also additional stores and shopping malls have opened in different parts of the country. Currently Melcom operates in excess of 20 stores across the country and this makes it largest retail chain in the country. A look inside the first Melcom mall in Accra reveals how the brand started to reshape retail shopping in Ghana since its inception.

The business began by bringing in electronics and such home appliances from Asia for sale in Ghana. The mass production lines made it possible to offer goods at competitive prices, which was a new concept at that time. The Melcom group has grown through decades to be multi-sectoral to sell all kinds of consumer goods in Ghana, including those for upper-class consumers. It keeps moving from the large retail chain stores in urban areas to the big one-stop shopping center in major cities that meet customer needs. However, I was not able to find out with certainty when Melcom first launched its doors in Ghana. Nevertheless, it is obvious it has been a dominant player in the retail market in the country since the 1980s.
