Definition: Appealing to Authority means that people will follow the advice of those in charge. For example, if a dentist recommends a certain type of toothpaste, chances are, people will look to buy that specific brand of toothpaste because an authoritative figure said so.

Connection: This advertisement represents an Appeal to Authority red flag because of it's recommendation by doctors. By using the words "studies have shown", the authorities, doctors, are giving off the impression that soda should be drank from a young age. However, the amount of sugar within soda is extremely high and would actually be unsafe for a young infant to consume.

Definition: The Red Herring red flag means that one party in the conversation will attempt to deter the other party by deliberately changing the topic of the initial conversation. For example, Michelle and I are having a conversation about potato chips. Michelle asks me why I don't like potato chips. I begin to talk about basketball, which then abandons the conversation about potato chips.

Connection: In this episode of Family Guy, two candidates are running for mayor. They hold a press conference for the public to ask questions. The red herring red flag is used here because they deter the audience by discussing issues that are more appealing to them, versus their initial question.

Definition: The Confirmation Bias is the idea of latching on to facts to confirm the legitimacy of a certain statement or fact. For example, if I think that someone is a liar, I will look for any clue to convince me that indeed that person is a liar.

Connection: This Powerade advertisement has a Confirmation Bias red flag in this because it's trying to convince you that Powerade is a complete solution to your thirst by putting scientific claims in there and pushing your mind to confirm the facts.

Definition: The Suppressed by Authorities red flag gives the idea that larger corporations, such as the government, are hiding the cures or solutions to large problems. Or, they are failing to address situations at hand.

Connection: The mass shooting in Florida sparked a national out roar on current gun laws by a large amount of people all over the United States. I believe that the gun laws are being suppressed by the government. They have the power to change the gun laws. But why would they, when the President receives $30 Million from the National Rifle Associate every year?

Definition: The Proof by Verbosity red flag represents an overload of information. It shows that the quantity of something is more valuable than the quality of it. For example, banks use verbosity by using bank jargon in their contracts and loan agreements. Not many people would read each word in a 10 page document, so they agree with the bank because they believe that the bank would not put so much time and effort into something if it weren't true.

Connection: Proof by Verbosity is used in this article because it shows how credit card companies use long winded agreements to coerce the buyer into agreeing on something they don't fully understand. This connects the two together by showing that banks and creditors follow this red flag with a very well used product: credit cards.
