I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul. In my degradation I have not been so degraded but that the sight of you with your father, and of this home made such a home by you, has stirred old shadows that I thought had died out of me. Since I knew you, I have been troubled by a remorse that I thought would never reproach me again, and have heard whispers from old voices impelling me upward, that I thought were silent for ever. I have had unformed ideas of striving afresh, beginning anew, shaking off sloth and sensuality, and fighting out the abandoned fight. A dream, all a dream, that ends in nothing, and leaves the sleeper where he lay down, but I wish you to know that you inspired it.”
(Book 2 Chapter 13 Page 115-116)

Lucie Mannette is a character loved by many with good reason, for her kind heart, beauty, and compassionate actions. Lucie is thought of as a string that has pulled everyone together, her pure heart being an attraction. She is a character that brings out the best in people, helping her father be recalled to life, Carton’s life given a purpose, and Darnay’s given love. She brings out the best in people because she has the talent of seeing how good a person can be, and shows them, love until they find that within themselves. Lucie symbolizes not only love but through unconditional love. Lucie is not just a beautiful fought-over woman, she is a symbol of how love and kindness are strengths and can change the course of many things.

Dr. Mannette is a man who has withstood a lot throughout his life. He survived 18 years falsely imprisoned and then chose the brave decision to be recalled back to life for his daughter. Mannette then faced the troubles that came along with the aftermath of surviving in a prison with the intense hobby of shoemaking. Through the story, as he battles his trauma he also receives the love of his daughter, Lucie. He is a hardworking honest man who has lots of integrity, working hard at his job of being a doctor. You find in the book that he is not only a man who has gone through a lot but has received a lot from it, leaving him very humble with a good heart.

Madame Defarge is bloodthirsty and vengeful, eager at the prospect of the fall of the Mannettes. Dickens describes her as a “stout woman with a watchful eye” and you find out for yourself that that is true as she is knitting, the activity is not just a hobby but a way of her observing and planning her revenge. She is a very determined woman stopping at nothing until she sees the fall of the Evermonde family. Her lust for Evermonde’s family's destruction comes from the killing of her entire family. Madame Defarge in the end is killed ironically by the bullet of her own gun. Her death proves that her cruel revenge brought nothing but pain back to her, and ended in her self destruct.

Personally, I think Sydney Carton is the most important character in this book, I think many people can identify with him and his struggle of confusion and hate towards himself. He is so self-deprecating and has no hope for change in his ways, it is not until he meets Lucie that he has the motivation to change his habits. Sydney stops drinking, he puts others' needs before his own, clearly taking the steps to better himself all due to his affection for Lucie. When you first met Carton he is given the nickname “Jackal” getting described as one of the most unpromising men and a drunk, at that time he dismisses Lucie as a “golden-haired doll” though it is clear that is just a cover-up of his true feelings. He has the motivation and heart to change later in the book though as true as he said, it was too late for him to redeem himself. His hardest conflict is within himself, sadly for it to be solved it was his sacrifice of life for the sake of Lucie’s happiness and Darnay's freedom.

Dear my lovely Lucie,
I know you will never read this, nor do I want you to because I do not want to bother you with my feelings. You are more than just a beautiful woman, you are kind and pure. I wish with all my being I could be enough for you, but it is as clear as day that that will never be true. I sit here in my self-pity, though glad that you are happy. With your pure point of view, you think there is still time for me to be redeemed but I am afraid that time has passed. I wish you forever a happy life full of love that I could never have given you. I want you to know that you have given me the clarity that I desperately needed. You bring out the best in people and you have brought out the best in me.
                    your friend,
                                  Sydney Carton

(This is a journal entry made by Carton directed at Lucie)
