In September 1939 Hitler invades Germany. Nazis invasion of Poland was the start of WW2. The Nazis prepare to attack Poland unexpectedly. In other words it was a big ambush. The Nazis bomb Polish cities as you can see on the newspapers. Poland was not prepared for the warfare. Britain and France help Poland against Hitler. 400 thousand or more were captured. 66 thousand were killed during the invasion.

Yanek's family was lucky and was not taken by them. Uncle Moshe and Yanek escaped so they could have Yaneks bar mitzvah. They also moved in to the roof where they found a chicken coop.

They needed Jews for the concentration camp. The meaning is that they could kill you instead of sending you to the concentration camps. Yanek heard gunshots outside from a machine gun. With also a scream from a woman. They started liquidating people in the streets.

Specifically Dutch Jews were getting deported in trains. The would go to camps in the Netherlands. The Jews from from the Westerbork, Amersfoort, and Vught camps. They had around 60,000 Jews to Auschwitz and about 34,000 Jews to Sobibor. They trains carried about 100 thousand Jews Auschwitz, Sobibor, Theresienstadt, and Bergen-Belsen.

When the roll call was announced when he got there he didn't see Uncle Moshe. Yanek held his tears back when he saw Moshe wasn't there. Then he wondered about where Uncle Moshe put the money. He lost the money and a family member. Yanek's cleaning the ghetto job ended. He was went back to work in Plaszow.

The Kapo told him if he did try there would only be salt available to eat. Yanek Saw a man who awfully looked strangely familiar. He asked if one of them if their name was Holtzman. The man said no,"my name is Finkelstein!". He was one of the Judenrat's Policemen that led the Nazis to his Flat.

Yanek was moved to the Trzebinia Concentration camp. The Job the prisoners had was to move a pile of rock. They were heavy, big and rough. They would have to go from one pile to the other over and over. Yanek didn't show his expression on how afraid he was. The Nazis changed their mind and told the prisoners to move the pile they already moved to it original location. The officers kept hitting the prisoners until they moved.

The guys said its so you don't suffer for long before you die.

Prisoners in the morning did wake up. On some occasions some didn't. Yanek met a boy one or two years older than him. Yanek for the first time in years has introduced himself to that boy. His name was Fred and they were both from Krakow. They heard some planes pass by it was the allies. The allies we the Americans that flew by. One day Fred looked very ill. Turns out he was sick and couldn't work. The kapos beat Fred with clubs. After the beating he was dragged to roll call and later hung.

Everyone was getting moved to a different camp. They were taken to camp Sachsenhausen. There were no trains so they would have to march there. Every prisoner had half a loaf. The prisoners were struggling and if you were too behind then you would be shot down. Far away there were bombing and it was the allies. Yanek was too weak to cheer for them. During the Death march they sang a song which brought their spirits up to keep marching. After a couple day they made it. They made a race to live.
