Consequences of Plastic by Kelly Murley

What are some consequences of plastic trash in the ocean? Research what happens to the plastic that is thrown out. What kind of path does it take to get to the ocean? What kind of plastic is entering the ocean and how is it harming the ocean? How is it affecting animals? Once you have researched these questions decide what you share with your class and place it on the shared padlet. This can be links to other websites, Youtube videos, just information. The choice is up to you!

Sadly trash in the ocean is slowly killing off many species of animals. Many animals mistake small pieces of trash for food. When an animal takes in the plastic their digestive systems are unable to break it down. This can hurt the animal that ate it or if that animal is eaten the plastic will then be transported into the body of a new animal. Another problem that is on the rise is the fact that fish and other sea creatures can get stuck in trash. When an animal gets stuck it can cut off there circulation. You may just think that the sea creatures are the only ones being effected by trash in the ocean but, sea gulls and other birds that eat fish are taking in this plastic as well. Up from the sky it is hard to tell if something is food or not, so when they swoop down to catch "fish", they catch trash instead. When a bird takes in the plastic it might die on the land causing, land animals to eat the bird that has plastic in it carrying it into the land creating even more problems.
http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/campaigns/ocean_plastics

Why do the animals eat the plastic in the ocean? The animals eat the plastic because it looks like food. According to the website the experts also say that it smells like food to the animals. More than 200 animal species ave been known to consume plastic. The animals have also been known to eat the wrappers and litter that have been thrown into the ocean. For a long time the researchers have thought that the plastic draws the animals to it. But that has been proven not true. They say that the animals senses is what tells them to eat the plastic. Scientists estimate that there is about 165 tons of trash in the oceans today. That is equal to about 330,000 pounds of trash in the ocean. https://earthwiseradio.org/2016/11/why-do-animals-eat-ocean-plastic/

Plastic is incredibly harmful to the environment. When animals eat plastic it makes them sick. Stuff like plastic pop rings can get caught on their necks. This can make them not be able to swim and die. Ocean pollution is a huge problem but yet we still are doing nothing about it. When a animal eats a animal that already ate plastic it can still become sick. Now think of how big and long the food chain is in the ocean and how many animals could be affected by one little piece of plastic.

Plastic and pollution in the ocean can also cause global warming and make storms stronger and more dangerous. Think about all the damage all ready done by tsunamis and hurricanes. The plastic that is already is the ocean adds to that so before the hurricane take a tree down plastic is already being added and destroying building and structures. Did you know the #1 element in the ocean is plastic. Another fact is that plastic absorbs toxic chemicals in the ocean and causes poison to whatever or whoever eats it.

The trash harms the environment. Most sea animals can tell whether something is trash or normal food. Seabirds will eat almost anything which leads them to eat plastic which slowly poisons them. Sea turtles also have a habit of doing this, to them balloons look like a great kind of food but the string can suffocate them and the balloon can poison them. Another problem with ocean trash is that it costs a lot to clean up.

Toothbrushes, cigarette lighters, and syringes have been found inside of dead birds because they mistake the plastic for food. Birds are not the only animals that are mistaking the plastic for food many other animals are too These scenarios can stop happening if we just stop putting plastic into the oceans.

Blake, Heidi.

Plastic can get everywhere. 12 millions tons of plastic is entering our oceans every year. That is the equivalent of one trash truck full of the stuff, every minute. 2 billion-four-hundred thousand pounds of plastic. Just nine percent of the massive amount of plastic that we create is recycled. This means that most of our plastic is either incinerated or dumped in landfills, both of which are bad for the environment. Plastic can be carried by the wind into a major river, or directly to the ocean itself. Even worse for the ocean is plastic litter. This plastic can be carried by wind or by the rain, into sewers, or into rivers that empty into the ocean. Major rivers around the world carry roughly 1.15-2.41 million tons of plastic into the sea every year. that is up to 100,000 trash trucks. http://www.greenpeace.org/new-zealand/en/blog/how-does-plastic-end-up-in-the-ocean/blog/60072/

Ocean creatures eat the plastic spilled or thrown in the waters, other animals eat those animals, and then they die because plastic is non digestible. Sometimes the plastic and trash that gets in the ocean is out of our control, because winds can lead the trash that got knocked out of its container on garbage day (that happened in my neighborhood not too long ago; there was trash blowing everywhere for about a week straight), into the rivers and waterways that eventually lead into the ocean. The thing is that people don't clean things up, because people either don't care or don't realize the consequences. It is insane how many people simply do not care. I wonder if those people enjoy seafood, and wonder what happened to the fish industry after seafood is deemed unsafe to eat because of all the plastic that finds its way into the sea.

We have 7 some billion people on this planet we should be able to do this for the future of the world for our great great great great great great great grandchildren for the world for us.

Plastic that ends up in the ocean can harm many of the oceans creatures. The plastic could be eaten and kill an animal, or a fish or something can get trapped in the plastic and die that way. If you just throw something that is plastic on the ground, the wind can blow it far away and it can end up in the ocean. http://www.prijatelji-zivotinja.hr/index.en.php?id=934

In 2010 8 million tons of plastic waste were thrown into the ocean. This left many animals and their habitat devastated as they ate some of it getting it into their systems and eating each other all the while picking up more plastic and dying. There was an estimate of 275 million tons of trash thrown into the ocean by 192 countries. That estimate can calculate up to 13,888 tons every year! We could be recycling this plastic but we are harming the environment instead of going the extra mile to keep it safe.

Many animals such as fish, turtles, and seabirds all mistake plastic for food. And we still keep putting the plastic into the ocean. Fish injust 12,000-24,000 tons of plastic each year. Some scientists cut open some animals and find that there are pieces of plastic inside of the animals.

About 165 million tons of plastic has made its way to the ocean and it is affecting the creatures very badly. Some animals will think that the plastic is food and they will go on to eat the plastic which is bad for them. 91% of plastic is not recycled and that can effect the environment super negative way. Also plastic can last more than 400 years without breaking down so that makes for trouble in the ocean.

Consequences of Plastic
What are some consequences of plastic trash in the ocean? Research what happens to the plastic that is thrown out. What kind of path does it take to get to the ocean? What kind of plastic is entering the ocean and how is it harming the ocean? How is it affecting animals? Once you have researched these questions decide what you share with your class and place it on the shared padlet. This can be links to other websites, Youtube videos, just information. The choice is up to you!

Animals are affected greatly by plastic, the trash ruins thier homes and poisons thier food. Mother birds can accidentally regergitate plastic into thier babies mouths, causing death or sickness. Sharp peices of plastic can cut animals and get lodged around thier throats.
