Whitney used his education, leadership, and knowledge of social justice issues to profoundly impact the profession of social work. He was an early advocate of building an open and free society and made correlations between a black person's socioeconomic status and how it impacted their ability to thrive in an already racist community. Going further, he helped bridge the gap between white politics and poor blacks, becoming one of the leading influences on government social policies (Whitney M. Young, Jr. | American Civil-Rights Activist, 1998).
