The document is a painting. The title of the painting is : "Afrocentric Power and Equality". It was painted by Shepard Fairey and it represents/portrays the political activist and feminist Angela Davis. Angela Davis has close relations with the Black Panther Party. The colors in the background are bright and we can also see flowers as well as peace symbols. The words: Power to the people" can also be read in the background. ( it is also the title of a song written and sang by John Lennon.) In the foreground, Angela Davis has an Afro Hairstyle which symbolizes the fact that she is proud of being African American. This echoes with the slogan "Black is beautiful". The point of this slogan was to be proud of being "black" and proud of showing it. Moreover, we can also read the words "Power and equality" which is what African Americans were claiming at that time.

The contradiction is that they claim that "all men were created equal" and yet there are slaves in the South of America. Even Thomas Jefferson who helped for the creation of the Declaration of Independence had slaves in his plantations. Furthermore, they want to break free from the kingdom of Great Britain because they pay too many taxes and be considered as a real country. In addition to that: the declaration of independence was written by white men and for white men only. This declaration obviously didn't include women and African American. In other words, they claimed what they were not able to to their "citizens" that is to say: "Freedom and Equality".

The Union Victory in the Civil War may have given some 4 million slaves their freedom, but African Americans faced a new onslaught ( attaque/assaut/charge) of obstacles and injustices during the Reconstruction era (1865-1877). By late 1865, when the 13th Amendment officials outlawed the institution of slavery, the question of freed blacks' status in the postwar South was very much unresolved. They enacted a series of restrictive laws known as the "black codes", which were designed to restrict freed blacks' activity and ensure their availability as a labor force now that slavery had been abolished. For instance, many states required blacks to sign yearly labor contract; if they refused, they risked being arrested as vagrants and fined or forced into unpaid labor.

The contradiction here is that the former slaves are supposed to be free but the states enacted a series of restrictive law to restrict freed blacks' activity and ensure their availability as a labor force now that slavery had been abolished. What was called slavery in the past is now legalized racism. An African American can be send to jail for life if he/she marries a white person. In other words, every aspect of their daily life was still controlled by the white people.

This picture is entitled American Gothic and was taken by Gordon Parks in 1942. It portrays a charwoman (femme de ménage) called Ella Watson. There is nothing in the frame except a black woman, her mop, her broom and the American flag. This picture reminds us of a painting of the same name by Grant Wood. Parks himself once called the portrait "an indictment (inculpation/mise en examen) of America." In fact, this picture enabled the photographer to speak out against racism in America. Ellis Waston was cleaning offices in Washington D.C but was a stenographer. She would not be hired because of the color of her skin and was not earning enough money to feed the entire family. This picture symbolizes Injustice and racism in America.

•In the 1920’s and 30’s, racial prejudice made blacks to move to the urban north of the USA. In the predominantly black Area of Harlem, new York, a major cultural movement emerged.

•It is known today as the Harlem Renaissance, but at that time it was called the « New Negro Movement ». The movement reflected the expression of a new racial consciousness for African American artists and intellectuals who believed that, through art, they could fight stereotypes and racial prejudice and thus achieve recognition. Some of the common themes were: the experience of slavery, the effect of institutionalized racism (=legal forms of racism) and the emerging new black identity.

This poem was written by the African American Poet Langston Hughes. It is written in free verse and features short lines and simple language. The poem is composed of three stanzas.
It is seen from the perspective of an African American man. Moreover, the use of the pronouns is quite revealing here because the speaker uses the pronoun "I" but seems to imply that it is a "universal" I to refer to the African American community as a whole. ( common experience). The pronoun "they" is used to talk about the white people. There is a gap between the two parts of America but the speaker wants to erase it so that they can live together and sit at the same table.
The speaker declares/ asserts that he too can "sing America" which alludes to the fact that he is claiming his right to feel like a real American and to feel patriotic towards America. Yet, he is the "darker brother". these two words emphasize the difference and the similarity at the same time. They are different and yet they are brothers. The speaker adds: "they send me to eat in the kitchen". This sentence alludes to the common practice of racial segregation during the early 20th century, when African American faced discrimination in every aspect of their lives. In addition to that the speaker does not give up, he proclaims that "tomorrow" he will join the others at the table. He seems to be convinced that a better future lies ahead. He is also convinced that the "others" will see "how beautiful" he is. In other words the speaker is waiting for them to realize that "Black is Beautiful."

How Have African Americans achieved recognition?
African Americans fought a lot for recognition since slavery was abolished more than one century ago. Those fights have taken lots of forms. For example in art. In painting, African Americans promoted power and equality for example with Afrocentric power and equality which represents Angela Davis, a black political activist and feminist. This painting is one of the pieces that symbolizes pride. However, the power over the blacks was in the hand of Americans in the USA. Many texts of laws were written, omitting the fact that African Americans played a major role in their recognition. To illustrate: the statue of Abraham Lincoln shows that African Americans' liberty was possible thanks to white people only. Fortunately artists notices the injustice against the black people. Gordon Parks took this picture of a black woman called Ella Watson, standing in front of the American flag with a mop and a broom. The artist showed that black people were not treated as the white people. Ella was a stenographer but had to work as a charwoman to feed her family. This picture denounces the injustice and racism. At least, African Americans are on their way to achieve recognition.

Sula by Toni Morrison.

Question 1:
The scene takes place in the USA. A mother called Helene and her daughter Nel are travelling on a segregated train from the North , back to the South. The fact that this scene happens in the South is relevant (pertinent) because it also depicts what could happen to the African Americans with the Jim Crow laws.

Definition: Jim Crow Laws:
The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. Enacted by white Democratic-dominated states legislatures in the late 19th century after the Reconstruction period, these laws continued to be enforced until 1965. They mandated racial segregation in all public facilities in the states of the former Confederate States of America, starting in 1896 with "separate but equal" status for African Americans in railroad cars.

Question 2/3:
We can notice that the conductor is a white man (L1). What is striking (frappant) is the way Helene, Nel and the white conductor are looking at each other. For example, Helene is said to be "looking up" at him (L7) Hence/ Therefore she seems to be smaller than him which conveys a feeling of superiority/ domination.
Not only is she dominated by the fact that she is a colored woman but also by the white man's gaze.
In addition to that, he is "staring at her". He seems to have the power and she seems completely powerless. Furthermore, he calls her "gal" which implies that he does not even consider her as a woman but as a child.

Question 4:
The eyes of Nel have a "hard wetness that veiled them" which means that she is on the verge of crying (être sur le point de...) . New is now fully aware of the way people are treating her mother. She sees how her mother is humiliated by the conductor. That is how Nel decided not to let anybody "turn her into jelly". Moreover, the problem is not only that Nel and her mother are "pale yellow" but also that they are women facing "the salmon-colored face of the conductor."

Rice in blackface, which first surfaced in 1832 and was used to satirize Andrew Jackson's populist policies. As a result of Rice's fame, "Jim Crow" by 1838 had become a pejorative expression meaning "Negro". When southern legislatures passed laws of racial segregation directed against blacks at the end of the 19th century, these statutes became known as Jim Crow laws.
</sup>

Cordialement,
La classe de TS1
