Calypso fell in love with Odysseus and wished to make him her immortal husband, but Odysseus protested against this in hopes of returning to Ithaca. Eventually, Odysseus became Calypso's lover, and remained on the island for many years. Athena, favoring Odysseus, talked to Zeus to tell Hermes to convince Calypso to let him go. The gods attempted to persuade Calypso to let him return back to Ithaca. Calypso found him one day crying for his wife and home, and she decided to let him go. She then gave him a boat stocked with food and told him how to return home.
