What happens to food?

When animals eat food, it moves through the digestive system. Most of the digestion takes place in the small intestine. Large organic molecules, such as protein, carbohydrates and fat/lipids, are broken down and combine with water to form small organic molecules, such as amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids/glycerol. Molecules like fiber that can't be digested keep going through the digestive system and are expelled as feces. The small organic molecules move through the intestinal lining into the bloodstream. They are carried through the bloodstream to cells all over the body. Once they enter into the cell through the cell membrane, they are used for energy or growth. If a molecule is going to be used for energy, it undergoes cellular respiration. In cellular respiration, one glucose molecule reacts with six oxygen molecules. They end products are six carbon dioxide molecules and six water molecules, which are breathed out. When the C-C and C-H bonds in the glucose break, the chemical energy is transformed into heat and motion. If cells do not have enough oxygen, they break glucose down into lactic acid, which needs more oxygen to be broken down. If molecules are used for growth, they undergo biosynthesis. In biosynthesis, SOMs combine into fat and protein. This is the reason that we can be made of mainly protein and fat, even though we eat mainly carbs. Carbs and fat are made of the same atoms. Water is created as a byproduct and leaves the cell. The protein and fat stay in the cell until it divides or they are used for cellular respiration.
