Leonardo da Vinci's parents were not married at the time of his birth. His father was a Florentine notary and landlord named Ser Piero, and his mother, Caterina, was a young peasant woman who married an artisan shortly thereafter. He grew up on his father's estate and got the usual elementary education of the time. When da Vinci was 15 his father apprenticed him to an artist named Andrea del Verrocchio. He did not continue his mathematical studies until much later when he was 30.

In 1482 Leonardo moved to Milan to work for the city's Duke leaving behind many unfinished projects such as the altar painting for the St. Bernard Chapel. He stayed there for 17 years until Ludovico fell from power. In that time he completed six works of art including The Vergin of the Rocks. He was also going to make a bronze monumental equestrian statue, but because of war at the time the bronze was instead used to make weapons, and the statue was made with clay instead. In late 1499, or early 1500 da Vinci left Milan and visited the city of Mantua, in March 1500, da Vinci proceeded to Venice where the governing council sought his advice on how to ward off a threatened Turkish incursion. From there he returned to Florence where he was appointed an architectural expert on a committee investigating damages to the foundation and structure of the church of San Francesco al Monte.

He went to Rome, taking his pupils Melzi and Salai as well as two studio assistants in hopes of finding employment. He stayed in Rome for three years before moving on, he eventually left Italy altogether and moved to France with Melzi in 1516 where he spent the last three years of his life in the small residence of Cloux (later called Clos-Lucé), near the king’s summer palace.

Leonardo da Vinci impacted the world in many ways. He devised some of the first designs for military weapons such as tanks, and guns. These weapons were not created into more than an idea until nearly 400 years later. He was also a great scientist and mathematician. He used math such as parallel lines and the vanishing point to add depth to his paintings, something that is still used today. He even discovered that a man could fit into both a circle and a square as shown in da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
