I have attached a study guide I wrote for students to use as they read the book.

This charming story of colonial Mexico, written by Elizabeth Borton de Trevino, is perfect for the Christmas season.  It tells the story of "the deep friendship between a boy...and an ailing albino deer sent from the Philippines as a gift for the King of Spain.  It is Lalo's task to nurture the sick deer back to health in the mountains of Mexico so that he will be well enough for the sea voyage to Spain."  In caring for the deer, Lalo encounters many dangers.  "Lalo grows in wisdom and courage as he comes to accept even the uncertainties and difficulties of the trust he has been given."  The book is deeply infused with Christian understandings.  It is a wonderful example of a book filled with the good, the beautiful, and the true.  The story is certain to greatly enlarge the world of any child.]]> 2018-02-23 20:38:42 UTC https://padlet.com/mccannvicky/jtzvisn88r0w/wish/234902086 7th grade "Day of the Butterfly" https://padlet.com/mccannvicky/jtzvisn88r0w/wish/235483957
Objectives:      Students will be able to formulate ideas about the short story in small groups.
                                Students will challenge their own ideas about friendship.
Standards: 7.2.6, 7.3.1, 7.7.9
Materials:   literature notebook, Greatbook story "Day of the Butterfly", Socratic Seminar questions handout
Warm-Up:  Read the Good Samaritan story out loud (Luke 10:25-37).  Then have students answer the question “Does this story relate to this Bible passage? Why or why not?” in their journals.
Procedure:  Have students get into groups of four to discuss their journal entries. Have students answer the question, "Does Helen act as a Good Samaritan? Does the class?" Then have students agree on the points in the story where the characters' actions show that they are thinking of themselves or thinking of others. 
Homework:  Hand out socratic seminar questions. Have students fill out 5 of 10.
