Qualitative Data Analysis is the process of studying non-numerical data, like interviews, notes, or surveys, to find patterns, themes, and meanings. According to academic sources, it is a general way to interpret different kinds of qualitative information. In business, it is used to understand customers and employees by looking at repeated ideas and emotions. In Human Resources, it focuses more on employee feedback to learn about workplace culture and motivation. All definitions are similar because they deal with non-numerical data and aim to find patterns and meanings, but they differ in focus: academic is broad, business is about customers, and HR is about employees. The most common keywords are patterns, themes, interpretation, and non-numerical data.

Qualitative data analysis is the process of understanding non-numerical information such as texts, interviews, or observations. It helps researchers find patterns, themes, and deeper meanings within the data. Some definitions focus on organizing and interpreting the data to understand people’s experiences, while others highlight identifying repeated topics through deep reading. Another definition mentions classifying and coding the data to better understand social or behavioral issues. All definitions share the idea that qualitative analysis is not about numbers but about interpreting meaning. While some focus more on coding and classification, others emphasize interpretation and context. Overall, it’s a method used to explore and explain human experiences in detail.

Sources (briefly):

Creswell (2013) – Academic book

Harvard Business Review – Article

SHRM.org – HR website

Qualitative Data Analysis means studying information that is not numbers, like words, interviews, or stories. Different sources say it is about reading and coding words to find ideas, themes, and meanings. The book talks about research, the article talks about people’s opinions and actions, and the HR site talks about coding words. All agree that QDA uses words, not numbers, and looks for patterns, themes, and ideas.

Qualitative Analysis in a Business Context

Customers are the only group more crucial to a company’s success than management and employees, since they are the source of its revenue. Ironically, if a company places customers’ interests before shareholders, it may be a better long-term investment. If feasible, it’s a good idea to try being a customer. Say you’re considering investing in an airline that has reined in costs, beat earnings estimates in three consecutive quarters, and plans to buy back shares. When you try to actually use the airline, however, you find the website bug-ridden, the customer service representatives cranky, the extra fees petty, and your fellow passengers resentful. The negative experience tells you that the company has a lack of priority for its customers and to be careful investing in the airline.
