Webb's Depth of Knowledge (DOK) is a system designed to categorize activities based on the complexity of thinking required to complete them. It serves as a framework for educators to create more cognitively engaging and challenging tasks. DOK is essential for educators since it helps them to identify the cognitive demand of activities and make informed decisions on how to design effective learning experiences for their students.

The four levels of DOK range from simple recall to conceptual understanding and metacognition.

It helps educators to design tasks that require students to engage in higher-order thinking and promote the complexity of thinking required to apply their understanding to the real world. The goal of an educator’s using Bloom’s taxonomy is to encourage higher-order thought in their students by building up from lower-level cognitive skills. Behavioral and cognitive learning outcomes are given to highlight how Bloom’s taxonomy can be incorporated into larger-scale educational goals or guidelines. The key phrases can be used (e.g., Example Assessments) to prompt for these skills during the assessment process.
