Specific Strategies Teachers can use to Accomodate ASD Children in their Classrooms

1. Use Task Analysis –very specific, tasks in sequential order.
2. Avoid overstimulation. Minimizing/removal of distracters, or providing access to an individual work area or booth, when a task involving concentration is set. Colorful wall displays can be distracting for some pupils, others may find noise very difficult to cope with. “Independent Work Stations” can work wonders for these children to focus on their work.
3. Give fewer choices. If a child is asked to pick a color, say red, only give him two to three choices to pick from. The more choices, the more confused an autistic child will become.
4. Provide flexible seating throughout the classroom
5. Give frequent “Brain Breaks”
6. Link work to children’s interest.

Autism Spectrum Disorder: What is it? What are some characteristics?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior.
Some characteristics in children with Austism Spectrum Disorder include difficulties with behavior, social interaction, and communication. They also have difficulties with change in routines, have unusual interests in objects, have unusually strong reactions to one or more of their five senses, have intense and prolonged emotional reactions to things, and may even do things over and over again (repitious behavior and speech).
This disorder is on a spectrum from mild to severe, and all children with Autism are not exactly the same. However, there are lots of great resources and tools available for children on the spectrum to be able to live a successful life.
