"“Gale gave me a sense of security I’d lacked since my father’s death. His companionship replaced the long solitary hours in the woods. I became a much better hunter when I didn’t have to look over my shoulder constantly, when someone was watching my back…Being out in the woods with Gale…sometimes I was actually happy.”(111-112)

This statement presents a dilemma within Katniss regarding her emotions towards Gale and Peeta. She implies that her relationship with Peeta may be a façade, but neither does she express any particular romantic fondness for Gale. This allows readers to form their interpretations, as the book never definitively reveals her true feelings.

When it comes to the games, it's important to consider the subjective experience. If someone can't maintain mental clarity, they'll be at risk of starvation, while physically and mentally stronger opponents who are less affected by fatigue will have an advantage. This means that Katniss may be in danger, as others may not even see her as a threat. Additionally, this builds even more suspense physically and mentally for Katniss.

This quote explores the Capitol's main objective, which is to destroy and create torment. This cruel objective has many small subplots, including Katniss' internal conflict in the games. Although she does not want to be there, she must push through the pain and overcome her feelings.

“I’m ashamed I never tried to help her in the woods. That I let the Capitol kill the boy and mutilate her without lifting a finger. Just like I was watching the Games.”(85)

This subplot reveals even more of the Capitol's tormenting and unrelenting actions to control the districts. Katniss feels conflicting emotions about the girl, who is now a silenced captive, but in the mental concept, this causes anguish for Katniss. But in the end, the girl shows a thankful attitude that Katniss didn't save her, for Katniss's sake.

This ideal is the representation of when Katniss can't find any personality to show in her interview. This propels the plot because this gives Katniss an unsure attitude in whether people will like her or not so she can get sponsors. This conclusive action leads to Peeta confessing his love for her, which in turn creates a whole new idea for the reader to view either as a ploy for the games or actual love.
