Being precise of what leadership means is a difficult task, as Daft mention in his book "Defining leadership has been a complex and elusive problem largely because of the nature of leadership itself is complex" (2018). For me, leadership is at the same time an attitude that anyone could have anytime – for a moment or permanently – and the art of motivating a group of people to act and feel committed towards achieving a common goal. In this sense, leadership will always need the essential role of the leader. What determines if it is good or not depends on many factors, but especially on the leader's attributes, natural or acquired. Effective leadership is based on ideas well communicated with assertiveness to engage others and being prepared to be the inspiration and director.

Assertiveness is a priority skill for leader. An assertive leader defends its thoughts, feelings and rights properly, while appropriately respects the thoughts and a right of others, such as described in skillsyouneed.com. My professional goal is to be General Manager in a hotel. To reach that goal I will have to go through different departments with traits required beyond management tasks like influencing my peers and leaders. Daft (2018) concluded in his book that there are different leadership roles and on the operational role, which is where a general hotel manager would fit, "Operational leaders are doggedly focused on delivering results. They need high self-confidence and tend to be assertive " (p. 43).

Assertiveness action plan

My action plan to increase my assertiveness includes learning and training. I need to comprehend more about the topic and how I could apply it. Daft (2018) cites in his book Hesselbein that says after a long experience in the leadership, "Make learning a top priority" (p. 7). On April 23rd, I am going to Bali with my girlfriend; we have rented a house to have a relaxed vacation. Being away of distractions will be a befitting atmosphere to read some assertiveness books. To deep dive in the skill at our arrival in Spain in June, I will take some personal coaching lessons on assertiveness.

To complete my strategy with actions I will need my girlfriend´s collaboration. I have asked her that when she detects that I am losing my communication control, she should give me a “signal“, which means that I have to take a big breath, reset the mind and start again empathizing with my conversation partner. What I want to practice is listening carefully, not interrupting the others and use the appropriate tone of voice while giving my opinion or ideas.

In 2000, I founded a travel agency in Spain that was very successful during the first decade. In 2012, I moved to Canada; leaving a team of 4 people in charge of the business. In the last 7 years, they were empowered to make their own decisions, only asking me for help when they require. I limited my role to control HR and economics. Although the revenue have been acceptable, the company´s vision as travel business had changed of what I started and then expected. Definitely, they need to be more pro-active and motivated to inspire our clients and create unique experiences for them.

To create a common business vision and motivate the team, this year I will invest in arranging a trip altogether to Canada's West Side. They will experience as clients one of the products that we sell. Daft (2018) mentions, "The ideal vision is identified with the team or organization as a whole. It grabs people in the gut and motivates them to work towards a common end "(p.405). In the leadership experience course, I have learned in the self-insight exercises that most of the time we do not analyze deeply how we are or how others are. Our biases and prejudices make us create a wrong perception. I am planning to make a self-insight exercise with my team during the trip. Each of us will anonymously write 3 strength and 3 weaknesses attributes of each other. As we are five, the result will be 15 negative and 15 positive characteristics. We will share to help everyone become aware of what we need to continue or develop. Finally, I will also provide the necessary tools and training to ensure improvements.

Improving my assertiveness will be help me in my future career in hospitality to achieve increased and more rapid growth, by communicating correctly. Being able to transmit clearly my ideas will help me to create stronger bond in personal relationships and to solve conflicts with guests, coworkers or vendors in the best way, as Daft (2018) demonstrates in his model of styles in how to handle conflict (p. 314). Motivating my team, definitely will build better atmosphere among us and alignment to deploy a common vision about the business to enhance the performance and profits.
