The task for Module 1, Week 1 was to collect objects like leaves and branches from our surroundings and arrange them on a white piece of paper. This activity required us to explore our immediate environment and gather natural materials to create a piece of artwork.

So What?

Engaging in this activity was quite enjoyable, especially as it allowed me to revisit my backyard and gather branches and leaves. It reminded me of my childhood when I used to spend hours exploring and playing outdoors, collecting various natural items to create makeshift art projects. This connection to my past made the task even more meaningful and highlighted how art can be deeply personal and nostalgic. The activity linked to art by showing how simple, everyday objects can be transformed into creative expressions, demonstrating that art is everywhere around us, waiting to be discovered and appreciated.

Now What?

The resulting image from this task includes leaves, sticks, and other natural elements from my local environment in Brookwater, Silkyoak Drive, Australia. The tree featured in my collection is a Silky Oak tree, and the leaves and branches reflect the unique flora of this area. The artwork captures the essence of my surroundings, showcasing the diverse textures and shapes found in nature.

From an educational perspective, this activity can be applied to teaching by encouraging students to explore their environments and express their creativity through natural materials. It allows kids to engage with their surroundings, understand the beauty of nature, and translate their observations into artistic expressions. Such activities foster creativity, observational skills, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world, while also providing a hands-on learning experience that can be both fun and educational.

In this task, we were asked to create visual art through media arts, with a focus on sustainability. We brainstormed ideas and planned the visual arts component for this lesson. We split into groups of three and collaboratively developed a story, writing a script to guide our project.

So What?

To bring our story to life, we built a background environment resembling the ocean. We used tissue paper to create waves and various other materials to craft coral reefs, a boat, and a little person. For instance, the boat was ingeniously made from a plastic sandwich container, demonstrating our commitment to repurposing materials and promoting sustainability. This project emphasised the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability, teaching us to be mindful of our impact on the planet and to use our creativity to raise awareness about these critical issues.

Now What?

After completing the visuals, we put everything together, ensuring each element was properly placed to tell our story effectively. We prepared our set with the tissue paper waves, the coral, the plastic container boat, and the little person, creating a cohesive scene that visually represents our script. Next week, we will begin recording our project, bringing our visual and written work to life through media arts. This process will allow us to apply our planning and creative skills, while also practicing teamwork and effective communication. This module underscores the importance of using art to convey messages about sustainability and the environment, empowering students to express their ideas creatively.

Continuing from our previous lesson on the environment and coral, we practiced extensively before recording our project. We used Photo Booth to create a stop-motion recording of our scene, ensuring every movement and transition was smooth and effectively conveyed our story.

So What?

Our recording captured crucial images illustrating how littering can devastate coral reefs. To emphasise this, we painted all our coral pieces white to simulate coral bleaching, a direct consequence of pollution and environmental neglect. We incorporated audio into our iMovie project, layering music and sound effects to enhance the storytelling and emotional impact. This added depth to our message, making it clear how human actions can harm marine life and ecosystems.

Now What?

In summing up our project, we highlighted the importance of sustainability and environmental awareness. We added a title and credits to our video, acknowledging our group members and the effort put into the project. Finally, we exported our video to Padlet, sharing it with our classmates and allowing everyone to view and discuss our work. This project reinforced the significance of sustainability and showcased how art and media can be powerful tools for education and advocacy.

In this week's module, we discussed the significance of lines in visual arts and how they can be connected to music. We explored the concept that lines can represent different musical elements, such as rhythm, pitch, and dynamics.

So What?

To illustrate this concept, we listened to various animal noises and created a continuous line that changed direction and shape based on the dynamics of the sounds. For instance, when the sound was high-pitched, our line ascended, and when it was low-pitched, the line descended. The line also turned and twisted, reflecting changes in the sound's intensity and rhythm. This exercise helped us understand how auditory experiences can be translated into visual forms, reinforcing the connection between music and visual art.

Now What?

Understanding the importance of lines in visual arts and their link to music enhances our ability to teach these concepts to young children. By integrating these skills into lessons, we can help children develop a deeper appreciation for both art and music. This approach encourages them to express themselves creatively and understand abstract concepts through tangible activities. By incorporating such interdisciplinary methods, we provide a holistic learning experience that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and sensory awareness in young learners.

This week, we read "Fox" by Margaret Wild, a story about a sly fox attempting to steal a dog’s friend, a magpie, by exploiting their vulnerabilities. The fox, with its cunning nature, creates tension and drama as it tries to lure the magpie away from the loyal dog. Our task for this week was to recreate scenes from the book and turn them into a play, with each of us taking on different characters.

So What?

We carefully selected pivotal scenes from the story and began acting them out, creating various settings to bring the narrative to life. This hands-on approach to storytelling allowed us to delve deeper into the characters' emotions and motivations. Acting out the scenes helped us understand the dynamics of the story better and emphasised the importance of empathy and perspective-taking. Such activities can be highly beneficial for kids, as they encourage creative expression, teamwork, and a deeper connection to literature.

Now What?

Finally, we recorded and timed our play, piecing all the scenes together to create a cohesive performance. This project underscored the importance of teamwork, as our collective efforts were essential for its success. Through this experience, we learned valuable lessons about collaboration, time management, and the technical aspects of staging a play. For teachers, incorporating drama and reenactment into the curriculum can be an effective way to engage students, foster their creativity, and enhance their understanding of literary works.

This week, we explored an Indigenous dance about the bird called a Bugal. We studied the dance's elegance and how it conveys emotions and imagery through graceful movements. We examined specific scenes from the dance and began to recreate them, focusing on the intricate details and expressive gestures.

So What?

As a class, we carefully recreated the actions from the Bugal dance. We planned and selected moves that everyone could perform, creating a story about Bugals playing and dancing beautifully together until a hunter arrives and pretends to shoot, causing the Bugals to flock away. This activity highlighted the importance of understanding and respecting Indigenous cultures while also emphasizing the expressive power of dance.

Now What?

We recorded each scene and compiled them into a complete dance performance. This activity was not only fun but also fostered creativity and collaboration. Such exercises can be valuable in teaching young students, helping them express themselves through actions and movements. By integrating dance and storytelling into lessons, educators can encourage creativity, cultural appreciation, and emotional expression in their students.
