Treaty of Versailles Presented to German Delegation- May 7, 1919.

The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to concede vast European Territories and overseas colonies. "War Guilt Clause," which forced the German nation to accept complete responsibility for initiating World War l. The Peace Treaty did not ultimately help to settle the international disputes, which had initiated World War l.

The dreadful sacrifices of War and tremendous loss of life, suffered on all sides, weighed heavily. Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party, was such an appeal to mainstream voters in the 1920s and early 1930s. Promises to rearm, to reclaim German territory, particularly in the East, and to regain prominence again among European and world powers after a humiliating defeat, stoked ultra nationalist sentiment and help average Germans to overlook the more radical tenets of Nazi ideology.

The Treaty of Versailles was important to the persecution of Jews because it was used for anti semitic propaganda in Germany.

Adolf Hitler's letter is addressed to a soldier named Adolf Gemlich. In the letter, he defines the Jews as a race and not a religious community. Hitler also repeats a number of antisemitic lies about Jews and demands that the "ultimate goal must definitely be the removal of the Jews altogether." This is the first known case of Hitler putting his anti semitic ideas into writing. It is commonly called the Gemlich letter. It was written before Hitler became a member of the political movement that would ultimately become known as the Nazi party. This is important because Hitler reframed his anti-semitism as a political endeavor and support to completely remove all of the Jews.

In the 25-point program, Nazi Party members publicly declared their intention to segregate Jews political, legal, and civil rights. Point 4 of the program, for example, stated that "Only a national comrade can be a citizen. Therefore, no Jew can be a citizen." The 25 points remained the party's official statement of goals, though in later years many points were ignored. This was important because it provided the justification and the political framework for the Nazi regimes violence, their genocide against the Jews and their discrimination.

The Nazi Party had been banned in November 1923, after Hitler and other Nazi leaders tried to seize power in a coup. Hitler was arrested, tried and convicted of treason. He was released on December 20, 1924. He gives this speech two months later, repeating many of his long-standing antisemitic ideas and asserting his role as Nazi leader. This is important to the persecution of Jewish people because this declared the party's commitment to fighting the Jews.

Adolf Hitler is Appointed Chancellor- January 30, 1933.

German President Paul Von Hindenburg appoints Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler as the Chancellor of Germany. Hitler was not elected to power, and he does not seize power in a coup. His power came through Germany's legal, constitutional process. Over the next year and a half, Hitler and the Nazis transformed Germany from a democracy into a dictatorship. This was important because this is when he got power to pull apart German democracy and begin the systematic persecution of Jewish people.

The Nazis claimed that German and foreign Jews were spreading "atrocity stories" to damage Germany's reputation. The Nazi storm troopers stood menacingly In Front of the Jewish-owned department stores and retail establishments, and outside the offices of Jewish professionals, holding signs and shouting slogans such as "Don't buy from the Jews" and "the Jews are our misfortune. This is important because this is the time marked when the Nazi state had officially authorized and had organized a campaign against Jewish people.

Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service- April 7, 1933.

The German Government issues the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service, which tended to exclude Jews and other political opponents of the Nazis from all civil service positions. The law exempts those who had worked in the civil service since August 1, 1914, those who were veterans of World War l, or people with a son or father killed in the action of World War l.

This was important to the persecution because the law for restoration took away their power and authority from Jewish people, and it legitimized state sponsored discrimination.

Law limits Jews in Public Schools- April 25, 1933.

After Adolf Hitler gets appointed and the Chancellor in 1933, government at every level, national, state and municipal-began to adopt laws and policies that increasingly restricted the rights of Jews in Germany. This new law limited the number of Jewish students in any public school to no more than 5 percent of the total student population. According to the census of June 16, 1933, the Jewish population of 67 million or less than 0.8 percent of the total. In 1933, 75 percent of all Jewish students attended public schools in Germany.

This is important to the persecution of Jews because this was an early start in the Nazi Germany's process of excluding Jews from the public life.

The first Jewish law in Hungary-May 29, 1938.

Hungary enacted two more comprehensive Jewish laws in 1939 and 1941. The second and third laws defined Jews in racial terms, forbade intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews, and further excluded Jews from Hungarian economic life. There were also a number of other Hungarian anti-Jewish laws that discriminated against Jews.

This relates to the persecution of Jews because they set the legal foundation for the racial persecution of Jews during the Holocaust.

Law on Alliteration of Family and Personal names- August, 17, 1938.

The Executive Order on the Law on Alteration of Family and Personal names requires German Jews bearing first names of "non-Jewish" origin to adopt an additional name. The government required Jews to identify themselves in ways that would permanently separate them from the rest of the German population. In the new August 1939 law, authorities decreed that by January 1, 1939, Jewish Men and women bearing first names of non-Jewish origin had to add "israel" and "Sara," respectively, to their given names.

This relates to the persecution because The law was part of a larger campaign to segregate and dehumanize the Jewish population in Germany.
