Firstly for DQ1, mental health is something that I really wanted to learn more about as it is an area that I am not knowledgeable in. Secondly DQ3, it concerns the environment. In Singapore, we are generating tonnes of waste every year and sooner or later our landfill will run out of space. I got interested in DQ3 because of the circular economy approach where we try to produce products that can be reused, recycled, and remanufactured for as long as possible. This new approach is better than how we handle products now, where we use them and dispose of them without trying to find another purpose for the products.

8b) In my course of study, I can apply the engineering design process in trying to understand and solving the DQs.
[The Engineering Design Process]:
Phase 1: Plan
Identify the problem, brainstorm possible new/existing solutions, and build a working prototype.

Phase 2: Test
Test prototype, analyze data presented by the prototype and then modify the prototype. (This phase is repeated until a final model is achieved)

Phase 3: Final Presentation
Present the final model and evaluate which solution was the most effective in meeting the problem.

With this process and using the knowledge and basic skills that I gained during the course of my study, e.g. Arduino programming, I should be able to understand and solve the DQs.

8c) For DQ1, increasing awareness of mental well-being issues or reducing the stigma of mental health treatment.

For DQ3, how to reduce household waste as a resident or how to repurpose food waste.

Firstly, DQ 1 is relatable as I have had many experiences with mental health from my friends, family and even myself. It is a topic that is also on the rise due to COVID and definitely can be addressed in many ways. As for DQ 3, I had been watching videos recently that documented Japan's and Korea's method of recycling and I always wondered why we do not adopt the same method here in Singapore. I have also heard multiple times about how the semakau landfill will be full by 2035 and it worries me.

8b) As a media student, I think I can help in terms of providing information in new ways to educate the mass about problems.

8c) DQ 3: Food Waste, Plastic Waste.
DQ 1: Increasing Youth Outreach Online, Limiting the negative impact of social media

Explain why (e.g. personal interest, prior exposure, pressing societal issue)

DQ1: As I have had friends in the past who have struggled with their mental health and the stigma that it has been passed down from a very traditional lifestyle. I have had friends who have lost their lives to this battle against their mental health. So I find it a challenge to help myself and others, making sure we don’t lose any more lives than we already have.

DQ2: Interesting enough, I have been raised in multiple settings and cultures before so I find this topic very close to home. I’ve been taken care of by helpers which essentially come from a different culture, so does my parents who also come from different cultures, and being brought up in Singapore, it’s truly a mixed experience as one could imagine. So all in all, I feel this topic would be something that I would be keen on looking into more; a better environment and system for the mixed racial setting we have in the island.

b) How do you think you can apply your disciplinary knowledge and skills in understanding and solving the DQs?

As a Mass Communication student, I have the means to reach out to the masses and disseminate information in a quick, simplified manner that can both get my point across whilst also eliciting a reaction with my audience. My area has also taught me various ways of conducting primary research in order for me to gain more insights in the particular subject I am working on.

c) List a few topics for each of the shortlisted DQs that you think make a worthy semester project.

DQ1: Increasing Access to Treatment & Resources, Limiting the Negative Impact of Social Media, Reducing the Stigma of Treatment

DQ2: How can we actively make more spaces for foreign workers to feel more at home in Singapore (other than the various cultural places that exist)?

For DQ1, i feel that mental health is an ongoing topic in Singapore but we tend to ignore it as society thinks that it is small problem. For DQ3, i feel that Singaporeans are doing their part in keeping Singapore clean, however, there are some ways in keeping Singapore a clean and green country. One of the ways is separating recyclable and non-recyclable materials into their respective rubbish bin.

8b) For DQ1, i think i as a student nurse can try to understand what the person is going through and listen to them, instead of ignoring their mental health. I can also advise them on what can they do to not be so stressed up and come up with activities to help them de-stress. For DQ3, there isn't much i can help but in my recent clinical posting, they use hardened paper containers for medical use instead of plastic, and once it is being used, it would be thrown into a machine where it will dilute the paper to make it reusable again.

8c) DC1: What are some of the ways that we can do to de-stressed ourselves from time to time

DC3: What are some of the methods we can use to reduce plastic waste in Singapore?

However, my passion for mental health issues erupted in 2018 when I read a play for English Literature called Off Centre. It was a play about two characters, one with schizophrenia and one with depression, as they struggle through life fighting against the stigma against the mentally ill. From there, I had been wildly passionate in trying to raise awareness for the mentally ill. I have written several articles for my writing modules on the everyday challenges of the maintaining one's own mental well being and I think Singapore still has a long way to go in terms of educating our youths to be wary of their own mental wellness as we live in quite a cold and competitive society. As a Singaporean youth myself, I sometimes forget to take a breather from all the rushing and grinding to be successful that I am guilty of forgetting the importance of maintaining a healthy mindset.

For DQ2, I feel that Singapore still has a long way to go in terms of inclusivity. Even though on the surface we are a peaceful and harmonious nation, every Singaporean should be able to admit that there are some underlying tensions among communities of people. I feel that this may have resulted in a lack of sense of belonging wherever they are, they do not feel involved in their own communities. Hence, I think it is important that all communities of people get to have representation for their culture where they live, this can foster a more inclusive community and forge a better understanding of culture among all communities.

b) I feel that my disciplinary knowledge of the media is very important in communicating key messages to everyone. In the theory that we learn, there is a theory called Cultivation Theory, the theory states that long term exposure to a consistent message would be able to forge a belief in the message for someone. I believe that with enough consistent messaging, people will start to believe in the positive messages put out by the media. For example, tips on how to maintain a healthy mental well being can be enforced into someone's memory if repeated enough, like how most Singaporeans can remember the 5 step mozzie wipeout due to the repetition of it during the dengue season on TV.

c)
DQ1:
- Prevention is better than cure (play to the stingy side of Singaporeans because therapy is $$$$$, as well as the obvious serious long term effects if one was to give in to negative mental well being)
- Self-love beats all love (talk about the common value of "always putting others first" and how to know whether you're ready for that)
- Sometimes words speak louder than any action (It's ok to voice out in times of distress, even if it is hard, don't wait for others to notice that you're in a bad shape, highlight how to be self-aware of one's own mental well being and how important it is to take the first step)
- More Health Ed classes on self-esteem from a young age

DQ2:
- Have designing competitions where one community of people try to design a space for another community of people (it gets people thinking about the culture of other communities as well as get the original community of people to clear up misunderstanding that may have been represented in their designs)

For DQ1, I feel that mental well-being calls for the need of attention as it is not as simple an issue that it seems. It is important that we care about this aspect as having a good well-being will help us to get through anything in life. As a member of the Peer Helpers CCA in my school, I have heard from participants who have shared about their thoughts and feelings. Then, I realized that many of my peers are facing many kinds of stress which are often overlooked. Thus, our mental well-being is an issue that calls to be addressed.

For DQ3, Singapore’s landfill capacity is a worrying issue for our small nation. Most of the time, the items that we throw away are contaminated even if we do our means of throwing the rubbish in the recycling bins. As such, these wastes must be incinerated. Other than issues like limited land space, such incineration will impact our global warming, inadvertently causing climate change. Ultimately, this could have a turn on our ecosystem and being inter-dependent on it, we would suffer the consequences. Thus, Singapore’s landfill is something that is a cause for concern.

b)

Yes, my disciplinary skills and knowledge can play a part. As an Early Childhood educator, it is my role to be a facilitator of the children’s learning. For DQ1, children may not be able to understand mental well-being but I can put in simpler terms by talking about their emotions, and helping them to learn how to regulate them which can be beneficial in the long run. For Dq2, I can provide simple hands-on activities for the children and let them watch videos for them to have a basic understanding on the issue about Singapore’s current landfill.

c)

DQ1:

How can we promote mental wellness?

What are ways to manage our mental well-being?

DQ2:

What are activities that we can do to create unite the people of our society?

DQ3:

How can we raise awareness on ways to dispose our trash properly?

What are ways to make our trash “useful”?

With Singapore being such a fast-moving country, some people are unable to keep up and with many working extra hard, the mental health of people are neglected, resulting in many breaking down and even hurting themselves.
