I've started recognising (but still need a bit of guidance) what support each local research group offers, and it's been helpful in knowing who to approach depending on what I need.

During my ACORN research internship, I have gained an overview and understanding of the local research systems at GSTT, including key structures such as ACORN@GSTT, R&D governance, and finance.

I have accessed local R&D policies through the GSTT R&D website (GTi link) and ACORN training, allowing me to understand research approvals and ethical considerations. I have also learned how to signpost colleagues to relevant research support and training resources.

Moving forward, I intend to link with our research lead in our Department to discuss my project and gain further insights into the research approval process. I will also continue engaging with research teams and attending relevant training to strengthen my knowledge.

On 29th of April, my mentors Holly and Charlotte, helped me talk through my research and made me more aware of the ethical concerns like patient consent and emotional impact, especially since my topic is sensitive.

I've learned how to direct colleagues to ACORN and NIHR platforms, which I feel is a small but helpful way to support others on the same path.
