The Treaty of New York, signed by the Muscogee Nation and the U.S government, was the first of many land treaties negotiated between the Native Americans and the U.S government. Thomas Jefferson came up with a policy intended to drive indigenous people from their land. Under this policy, the government would offer incentives to settlers who moved near Indigenous territory, keeping them from hunting and forcing them to use agriculture. They would go into debt buying the farm equipment, and cave in to the government’s attempts to purchase their land.

The treaty was signed with only a small portion of the Cherokee present and allowed thousands of white settlers to seize the Cherokee’s land, stealing from and murdering many Cherokees in the process. The majority of the Cherokees refused to leave their land.

Many Cherokees had their homes looted and were forced into internment camps. Similar to the Choctaw’s march west, the Cherokee’s forced march took place in winter, causing the death of twenty-five hundred Cherokees, one-fourth of the entire Cherokee nation.

The Indian appropriation act declared that “hereafter no Indian nation or tribe within the territory of the United States shall be acknowledged or recognized as an independent nation”. This act was largely motivated by economic needs. As settlers were expanding west, companies were laying down railroads hoping to industrialize what they saw as a  “savage” land.
