The witch trials did not originate in the United States, they started even before the 1300s and the Salem Trials are those that started in 1962; these were mainly made against women. It is said that it started in the United Sates after a little girl died screaming something to her father (during the time of the first colonies). The first to be hanged in Connecticut was Alse Young; after this instance, there were many more trials coming and four executions. The persecution of "witches" actually occurred in the 20th century. These persecutions have become a global problem, where their multiple murder occurrences in Africa, Latin America, and immigrant communities in the US and Western Europe. Not only is there brutality towards adults, but to children as well. In addition, men were established to be the witch hunters and the victims consisted of mostly women. Plus, some churches contain rituals that praise against "sorcery". Puritans were a group of Christians who tried to "purify" the religion and break away from any and all Catholic influence. This group emerged during the 16th century and was a more extreme version of Protestantism. Though the movement originated from the Church of England, many Puritans emigrated to the New World in search for religious freedom and economic opportunity. A famous group of Puritans were the Pilgrims who founded the colony of Plymouth in what is now Massachusetts. They believed in the absolute sovereignty of God and the complete dependence on script (Bible). Early witches used spells and called on spirits. Nobody is sure of the first suspected witch, but the first witch spoken of was in The Bible in the book of 1 Samuel. From 1500- 1660, around 80,000 suspected witches were killed in Europe, and around 80% of the suspected were just women thought to be involved with the Devil. witchcraft is the practice of witches performing magic usually black magic , they are said to usually meet at night and can take lives away and usually perform this magic for the devil. The history of Witch hunts in Europe began due to Religious texts stating the removal of witches, who bargain with the Devil for powers, from society. Tens of thousands of supposed witches have since then been tried and executed for being a witch.  Most of the time these are women because cultural beliefs saw women weaker, and therefore more easily being drawn to the powers of the Devil. The migration, beginning in 1630, was a result of the Stuart monarchs disapproving any religions that were not Catholic. Puritans were the most rapid migrating group during their time. Puritans believe God expects them to live by the scriptures. To be able to go to heaven, Puritans had to be part of the predestined elect group. In a town, only male church members can vote.
