It is said that it started in the United Sates after a little girl died screaming something to her father (during the time of the first colonies). The first to be hanged in Connecticut was Alse Young; after this instance, there were many more trials coming and four executions. Most people who are accused of practicing witch craft are located in Africa, the Pacific and Latin America, and immigrant communities in United States and Western Europe. Victims of these accusations are often burned alive or sometimes beaten to death; in some rare cases they may be stoned or beheaded. It is young men that usually take the role of witch hunters. Most people blame this problem on poverty in the developing world, but much of this violence has worsened against children since 2000.

Protestants believed that witches should be tortured because they made deals with the Devil and acted against the church. There was also an increase of literature about witchcraft, which caused tension and religious war. This increased a fear of witchcraft during the Reformation (which was a 16th century upheaval which split Catholic Europe).

This group emerged during the 16th century and was a more extreme version of Protestantism. Though the movement originated from the Church of England, many Puritans emigrated to the New World in search for religious freedom and economic opportunity. A famous group of Puritans were the Pilgrims who founded the colony of Plymouth in what is now Massachusetts. They believed in the absolute sovereignty of God and the complete dependence on script (Bible). They also stressed the importance of personal religious experience.

Nobody is sure of the first suspected witch, but the first witch spoken of was in The Bible in the book of 1 Samuel. From 1500- 1660, around 80,000 suspected witches were killed in Europe, and around 80% of the suspected were just women thought to be involved with the Devil. Witch mania became viral thanks to Malleus Maleficarum, which was a guide on how to hunt, identify, and interrogate witches. Modern day witches practice Wicca, which is an official religion of the US. Witchcraft was a big issue in earlier times, but although it is still practiced today, it is not feared as much as it is only used mainly"to stop someone from doing evil or harming themselves."

Tens of thousands of supposed witches have since then been tried and executed for being a witch. Most of the time these are women because cultural beliefs saw women weaker, and therefore more easily being drawn to the powers of the Devil. Some historians believe that widows were being accused of being a witch because removing the widow was a faster way of allowing a male heir to property the widow had power over sooner.
