When experiencing trauma, the brain shuts down all nonessential systems that moves to the lower brain systems (Lebow, 2021). After this occurs, it activates the nervous system and releases stress hormones that prepares for flight, fight, or freeze mode (Lebow, 2021). This affect student learning by creating dysfunction, anxiety, poor attention, and a decline in educational performance and engagement.
