As I can recall from my course, for assessment we can use the COP's triangle (conversation, observation, and product). In addition, there is formative and summative assessment, thus, the COP's triangle can be used to assess 'of' and 'for' learning.

Formative assessment is to see where the students are in their progress, its assessing 'for'. This is not graded towards their final grade, rather it is a referral to the teacher where they are in their understanding. This can be through discussions, observations, and some products but informal ones.

Summative assessment is to assess 'of' learning, where this is counted towards their final grades. This can be in forms such as tests, projects, journals, etc. In addition, as teachers we can provide assessment of through formal conversations through discussion or a debate.

On a side note, I believe that students should always get feedback back to them on a regular basis to inform them of their progress and stage in the class. Thus, the feedback needs to be descriptive, but also in person. It is one thing having it written, but more impactful if said face to face as they can ask questions and you can elaborate. I like to think of feedback in the form of a sandwich. You provide a positive of their work, then provide an area of improvement, and then finish with a positive overall so that the students leave with a good note rather then feeling disappointed about their work. Feedback is useful towards assessment as it provides the students areas where they need to improve and how they can improve.

Lastly, I believe that students should be allowed redo's. I am an individual who learns from mistakes, thus, if I can be provided a chance to redo an assignment, then I will increase my knowledge and understanding of a particular topic.

Assessment for learning is student centred assessment which allows for students to use assessment for their own learning—teachers are giving students what they need to grow. This is also known as formative assessment where we provide students feedback throughout the learning process, as well as reflect on what steps needs to happen next to better the learning of our class. This can be done in various forms such as rubrics, checklists, various work products, graphic organizers, etc.

Assessment of learning is considered summative assessment in which a collection of student achievement and progress are used in order to see where a student is at in a given time frame. These types of assessment are typically used for stakeholder such as administration, centres for education, and parents as evidence of a student’s academic achievement. This comes in forms of report cards, final test scores, school wide assessments, and provincial standardized testing.

Assessment as learning is essentially when students assess their own learning through reflection and make decisions of what will improve their own learning process. It can also be a form of peer assessment or group evaluation with strategies and goals to reach in one's learning and understanding. Examples of assessment as learning would be exit slips, two stars and a wish, KWL, etc.

From the assessment course that we took last semester, we learned 2 main forms of assessment:
Formative, which is assessment FOR learning. This focusses on what the student needs in order to continue to succeed or what they need to get to that succeeding level. It includes giving our students feedback throughout a unit, not just at the end, observing how they are working, ease dropping on conversations to ensure they are understanding the material, etc. It is also a chance for the teacher to look and see "Am I teaching this the best way for my students?" to see if they need to change they ways in order for their students to provide their best work and effort.
Every time you talk to a student in the classroom about their school work is a chance for formative assessment.
Summative, which is assessment OF learning. This is the assessment most of us dread. The tests, exams, essays and massive projects that our whole grade depends on. This assessment is usually what you'll see on a report card or on a report back from a province wide assessment. While we need summative assessment, there are ways that we can go about it that don't make it seem so daunting on our students.

I am only in my first year of this program (not the 16 month) and we have not yet had an assessment course. We have covered assessment FOR and OF in our other classes in passing. My understanding is that assessment FOR learning is formative assessment to make sure that our learning targets are being realized in class. This is to make sure that our teaching is on track and that our students are taking what they should from the lesson. It is to help tailor future lessons to where students are at now.

Assessment OF learning is assessment at the end of a unit or lesson. It is the assessment that is used I grading. It is the assessment that is used to gauge the overall comprehension once we have completed the unit.

Our assessment course with Barbara was extremely informative. Like the other 16 month'ers, we learned lots on the two main assessment tools:
Formative and Summative.
Formative is the assessment for learning whereas summative is the assessment of learning. It was emphasized that teachers should create more of a formative environment in terms of assessment and it is happening constantly in the classroom!

Assessment for learning refers to Formative Assessment and is performed regularly throughout students' learning. This not only provides feedback to students upon their learning but also gives the teacher an idea upon their students' progress and understanding so that they may gauge how well their instruction is being received. It also gives information upon where to go next, if anything needs to be slowed down or sped up or completely re-taught.
Assessment of learning refers to Summative Assessment and is done at the end of a unit or topic and provides a final evaluation - typically in the form of a grade or quantifiable mark. We are beginning to see more of an emphasis placed on formative over summative assessment as the former is much more beneficial in helping students to succeed.

Assessment for learning is for the students. It is formative assessment, and it makes sure that what we plan for our students is targeted in a way so that they may grow. Assessment of learning is us as teachers assessing what the students do in class-in other words, it is summative assessment. I do not remember much of what assessment as learning is, but I think it is when students have more of a say in their own assessment during class. They can create personal and class goals for themselves as well as taking the right steps in order to get there.
I learned both of these in our assessment class with Barb!
