Jadeite Axes

Jadeite axes are extremely rare and we know that in Jersey we have a remarkable number of them. We don't know why there are so many in Jersey but it shows that the Neolithic people attached importance to objects beyond practical use and would have used them for rituals, ceremonies or trade. These objects would have travelled thousands of miles before ending up in Jersey.

Jadeite Ring

This Jadeite ring is relatively small in size, but huge for impact. It is a ring made from Jadeite, a rock sourced from Mount Viso in the Alps. The rock is form a place difficult to get to, difficult to quarry and difficult to polish. This object would have travelled through communities and passed between people, which demonstrates that the Neolithic world was interconnected and that people moved around. This would have been a ceremonial or ritual object and whilst we do not know the precise use or importance, we do know that it must have been incredibly important to the Neolithic people. It is currently on display at the Jersey Museum.

We have a Museums in Schools Box available on the Stone Age. Museums in Schools is a project supported by Ogiers, which allows artefacts to come into your school for pupils to see objects up close.

You can request to have the Stone Age replica artefact box in your school as a classroom resource - free of charge. Please email education@jerseyheritage.org to book the box.

School visit to La Hougue Bie

Visit to La Hougue Bie - a Neolithic Passage Grave and a replica Neolithic Longhouse.

School visits with a Jersey Heritage Education Officer to La Hougue Bie will generally last up to 2 hours.

They will include:

Handling objects from the three ages of the Stone Age and a general introduction to the topic
Guided visit inside the Passage Grave dolmen
Guided tour of the Neolithic Longhouse
Hands-on Neolithic craft activities including quern grinding, axe polishing and wattle panel weaving.

These are free to local schools.
