This summer vacation, Museum Tours have become a widely recognized travel choice, and the "museum fever" continues to heat up. Some of the vivid and humorous cultural relics in major museums have attracted the attention of visitors and become the “Museum Xianyanbao (show-offs)” dubbed by netizens.

The term “Xianyanbao” is a slang term used in many local dialects, usually to describe someone who always likes to show off, do strange things, and make people feel embarrassed. However, nowadays, the term has gradually lost its pejorative(贬义的) meaning, and it is more to describe some special but interesting individuals who appear in serious groups, and they create a fun and joyful atmosphere.

And in the museum, some cultural relics stand out among the solemn ones thanks to their unique “Xianyanbao” characteristic of being funny and lovable. Netizens began to share their loving pieces of these show-offs on the internet and some corresponding comments which showed great humor had also appeared afterwards.

Source

3 Bringing "Show-off" Artifacts to Life

As "show-off" artifacts gain popularity, creative works have emerged, bringing them to life with more vivid charm.Content Creator @Animation Taoist priest Dee (@动画道长Dee), in an interview with Beijing News Radio, shared his experience.

Dee had been creating independent animations about Chinese traditional culture. One day, a fan suggested that he could make creative animations about artifacts and warmly recommended him to the artifacts of a hot topic called "museum show-offs." Dee found them interesting at first sight and started imagining how they would look when they could move, leading to the initiation of this animation series.

The creation of designing actions, especially for non-human/animal artifacts, requires greater imagination. Dee has made a lot of efforts. For example, when designing the action for the "Bronze Lamp", its long handle looks like a gorilla doing the action of "hand heart" which is a popular gesture in some Asian countries, therefore, Dee designed the action as "a gorilla clapped his chest" for the lamp.

When designing a wine vessel with an open mouth, since the artifact is from the Shandong Museum and the author, Dee, himself is from Qingdao, he thought of his hometown's Laoshan White Flower Snake Grass drink and created a motion where the artifact burps after drinking water.

Every time he visits a new city, Dee enjoys exploring the local museum. Through the appreciation of these artifacts, he could connect with the lives and thoughts of people from the past. For the painting style of this series, Dee drew inspiration from the traditional "rock painting", which he believes is very compatible with ancient cultural relics.

Dee shared with the audience that he enjoyed animations worldwide since childhood, yet he finds Chinese animations the most unique, especially those from Shanghai Animation Film Studio. He used to work in their water-and-ink animation team for a while, pushing for technical innovation successfully. Later, he started his animation channel out of interest.

Dee hopes that the online environment could encourage more originality. Dee aims to create more cultural-relic-themed animations and draw from China's fine traditional culture to produce more creative pieces.

Source

Shan Jixiang, the former director of the Palace Museum known as the "keeper of the Forbidden City," used a series of innovative measures to make this ancient cultural palace shine in modern society during his nearly seven-year of working from 2012 to 2019, turning it into a cultural icon.

In 2012, Shan Jixiang became the sixth director of the Palace Museum. He started a comprehensive exploration and reform of the museum. In five months, he walked through over 9,000 rooms of the Forbidden City, wearing out dozens of pairs of shoes, and was familiar with the 1.86 million cultural relics. This accomplishment had only been done by two people since the Forbidden City was built in 1420. Through in-depth research, he found three major problems: only 30% of the area was open to the public, 99% of the cultural relics were stored in warehouses, and visitors gained little from their visits.
