Hello, my name is Michal, and I’m new here. I will be assisting with "technical questions" related to FilmEU at VŠMU in Bratislava, but my main focus is in Visual Effects, a field I studied, work in, and also teach at VŠMU.

I consider myself a generalist at heart, as I strive to understand surrounding processes to optimize my work in the middle. However, I have a stronger connection to 3D scanning & Motion Capture, technologies I have done personally research in, as well as Lighting & Rendering, Color Grading, and 3D Simulations (FX).

Few examples of my ongoing projects:

Currently, I’m developing a new lens testing methodology with the goal of creating a growing database where cinematographers and VFX artists can find a unified collection of both technical and visual tests to help them choose the right lens for their projects.

Another long-term project is my collaboration with Lucia Čarnecká a sculptor and lecturer at VŠVU – Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Together, we create “live sculptures” by capturing her performances through 4D scanning and manipulating her physical sculptures in virtual 3D space via 3D scanning. These transformed digital objects and performances are then projected onto transparent materials from multiple angles, forming hologram-like installations accompanied by a soundscape, music, or even interactive elements presented in a VR environment. Lucia has had several exhibitions in Slovakia, as well as in China, for example.

example1, example2

I also work as a VFX supervisor and artist on both short and feature-length films. Additionally, I experiment with 3D scanning for location scouting as a pre-production tool and explore the possibilities of new AI tools in various VFX tasks. And to step outside the digital world, I am exploring shooting miniatures, combining traditional techniques with modern approaches like 3D printing, digital compositing, and even AI image manipulation.

portfolio

If you think I’d be a good fit for your project or if any of my activities spark an idea for a new discussion topic, feel free to reach out! 😊

my email: michal.sabik@vsmu.sk

Film Sound - Techniques and Technology

I’m Jonas Maksvytis from Vilnius, Lithuanian National Film School. With a career spanning more than 20 years, I work in all areas related to cinema sound post-production—i.e., ADR, dialogue editing, Foley, pre-mixing, re-recording, and delivery. I started with film, transitioned to digital, and now I’m moving toward the latest immersive formats and AI. I cover most of these techniques in my lectures at our Academy.

I’ve worked with directors from various countries and backgrounds, and their films have received awards at numerous international film festivals.

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1948704/

Restoration of archived old audio materials is another relevant theme in my agenda. This involves preserving and improving historical audio, as well as restoring it for use in modern films.

I’m looking forward to meeting colleagues from the film industry across the EU and sharing my knowledge through workshops in the areas mentioned above. My expertise is rooted not only in creativity but also in a technical background (I’m the technical director at the leading Lithuanian sound studio, UP Records). If you need consultations regarding equipment, studio installation, or calibration, I’m at your service!

One more thing to add: I’m particularly interested in the impact of reverberated sound on human auditory perception—psychological and physiological factors—and I’m looking forward to starting my PhD in this field. If this theme resonates with you, please feel free to get in touch!

jonas.maksvytis@lmta.lt

The Role of Text in Film

I'm Hilary Kenna, from IADT, Lecturer in Visual Communication, UX and Speculative Design. I'm interested in the role and presentation of text in the realm of screen media, and how we view, read and interact with text on/in screen environments. Years ago, I initiated the Film Titles Project between our Graphic Design and Film Students – which has proved to be a very successful interdisciplinary project that we still run today. My PhD research centred on Design Principles for Screen Typography and my professional practice has included interaction design, UX/UI and data visualisation of various mobile/tablet/software applications. Previously, I organised a conference in Dublin 2018 on Virtual Types: Future Forms of Typography and have been involved in a related research projects including editing a book: Transformations in Typography through the medium of the screen. Currently, I am experimenting with VR typography and have been teaching an experimental workshop with IADT colleague, Rob Griffin, in other colleges such as Aalto University and design schools in Estonia and Poland. We've been exploring themes such as Peace, Democracy, Sustainability and now Equality as part of Aalto's CIRRUS Baltic Network of Design(ers) for Peace. Next week we are teaching this workshop in Bergen, Norway. I realise I am very late to submit this, but if anyone is interested in collaborating on the development of a workshop exploring the role of text in film or VR film, or in related topics, please contact me: hilary.kenna@iadt.ie

Let's reconnect people through journalism?

Hello everyone!

Journalism needs to reinvent itself in order to win back audiences tired of the negativity and binary discourses (e.g. us vs. others) of the news that overlook the nuances of reality. At Lusófona University, we are developing a new theoretical and practical form of journalism, which we have coined Interconnected Journalism. It involves features that choose a pertinent topic to portray it from the point of view of different communities, giving visibility to the interconnections that exist between people. It therefore aims to combat social indifference, hate speech and populism, strengthening journalism and its role in building democracy.

We are looking for partners with expertise in the field of media studies that would like to receive us and discuss one or more themes, a methodology and a team of teachers and students capable of developing an interconnected journalism multimedia feature as well as a cross-media dissemination strategy. This international test is crucial to realising the scope and impact of this new way of doing journalism.
