Gender pay gap focuses on the reality that faces the world, men earn more hourly than women, when conducting the same or similar work types.

Although, progressively the percentage of earnings for women compared to men has significantly increased over time it is no where near equal, because any percentage point less than equal can never be enough.

In fact, “In 2020, women earned 84% of what men earned, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of median hourly earnings of both full- and part-time workers. Based on this estimate, it would take an extra 42 days of work for women to earn what men did in 2020.” (Amanda Barroso and Anna Brown).

Amanda Barroso and Anna Brown, “Gender pay gap in U.S. held steady in 2020” ,2021 https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/05/25/gender-pay-gap-facts/

Although many claim that there has been progress in the ongoing battle for bridging the gender pay gap, and that it has significantly improved in the recent years. It is often said, that women are unable to perform certain trades, the same or comparatively less efficient compared to their gender opposites, therefore women should make less. Male workers may also claim that it is unfair to be paid the same when you produce more or are able to do more work related items.

What isn’t considered is that in essential fields of work like the medical field, “ Women now represent over half of medical school matriculants, almost half of the residents and fellows, and over a third of practicing physicians nationally” (Amy Gottlieb). In a trade where comparatively, men and women will do the same work, and will soon dominate the workforce in presence. They are being paid “75 cents on the dollar” (Amy Gottlieb).

The same women who earn less per dollar in comparison to their gender counterparts, may soon be the one who saves yours or your family members life due to their heavy presence in the medical field.

Gottlieb, Amy S. Closing the Gender Pay Gap in Medicine : a Roadmap for Healthcare Organizations and the Women Physicians Who Work for Them . 1st ed. 2021., Springer, 2021, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-51031-2.

Over the years, gender wage gap has become brought to light and there has been the biggest controversy since. The period of strongest wage convergence between men and women was the 1980s, and progress has been slower and more uneven since then. Moreover, a number of other related trends appear to have plateaued or slowed since the 1990s, including increases in female labor-force participation rates and reductions in occupational segregation by sex (Blau and Kahn).

This proves that although this is a problem that many women face throughout the US and other countries, there is not much being done to change it. Other countries have also studied this and have attempted to implement rules or procedures to bring an end to the wage gap. Most of these strategies have failed and there someway somehow still ends up being a wage gap.

Blau, Francine D., and Lawrence M.

When studying gender pay gaps, a question arises. Can minimum wage reduce gender pay gaps? This is explored in an article by Mary Hallward-Driemeier and Andrew Waxman. This article takes a stance on census data from Indonesia. We are presented with information and charts regarding minimum wage pay and the difference amongst men and women.

After reading the article, it was concluded that gender differences on the impact of minimum wage increases are strongly correlated with educational background. Women with higher education benefit the most from minimum wages. This information could also be applied to women in the United States, but we too often see educated women being paid the same as men with less education in an entry-level position.

Hallward-Driemeier, Mary, et al. “Can Minimum Wages Close the Gender Wage Gap?: Evidence From Indonesia.” The Review of Income and Wealth, vol. 63, no. 2, 2017, pp. 310–34, https://doi.org/10.1111/roiw.12219

Although in the recent years, what can be considered one of the largest controversial topics, has been brought to light there is still a substantial difference in the rate of hourly pay for similar work produced between men and women. A gap in pay that should not exist, if an individual possesses the ability to produce the expected quality and if applicable quantity of work then the pay should be equal. This controversy should not rest until the gap has been bridged. - Ariel Trujillo

After reviewing opposing points of view, we can conclude that overall this is still a problem we face today. We can only hope for justice to be served in the workplace for equal pay rights for people of any gender. With the growing diversity of every country, I know this will be an issue that will always arise and will one day be fixed. -Liberty Farrell
