It may be better suited for trainees to have the choice between emdr, neuro, or systemic sooner. Knowing which material we would be engaging in may have helped us choose our supplementary placement. For example, if I knew I had a spot in the EMDR pathway, I may have opted for something where I could apply that.

Many trainees feel quite lost with the critical review. Fergal was helpful with his two sessions, but is the bigger issue that we don’t get enough research teaching to feel confident writing it. Grateful we only need to do one instead of two, but still really confused on how a quality piece of work is expected with so little specific teaching.

Poor quality of lectures

In general, some of the lectures have felt too broad and not helpful. This has been a running theme since first year. Bringing us into the building is not what will solve the issue. At a doctorate level, we should be receiving a high level of teaching. If we’re learning philosophy, why not bring somebody with a doctorate in this? (Just a thought, not sure if some trainees would prefer to only be taught by clinical psychologists).

I think that if we get a watered down version of teaching on a topic, go on to supervise or teach trainees ourselves one day, what will be the quality then?

A theme since first year again. We have very little training on how to practically implement skills.

Marking criteria change over the years

Looking back on various examples of old pieces of work that achieved a 'pass' mark in the past, I felt that there was no way they would have been a pass now. I wondered whether the marking criteria has tightened over the years, makin it more and more difficult to get a pass. It would it interesting to find out whether the process of marking is reviewed/audited year to year, and what percentage of students get pass/pass with cond/referral compared to previous years.
