Relationships. Relationships. Relationships. Throughout the article it discusses how vital it is for students to experience warm, trusting teacher-student relationship in their school environments. Students need low degrees of conflict in order to perform well academically and have fewer behavior problems. I enjoyed reading the various ways to create a positive social-emotional learning environment. One strategy I plan on using within in my classroom is the "cool down strategy" for those students who just need a minute to cool down. I will brain storm with my students various ways we could use to cool down and come up with 3-4 to pick from if they need a moment to calm down. I hope that this will help students to become more independent and able to manage their feelings on their own.

The title of the article is my new life motto so I had to pick this one. We all know relationships are vital for the classroom. My big take away from the article was "When behaviors problems occur, students are encouraged to take time for reflection or cool-down breaks." With diverse group of 2nd-8th grades, I am going to use more reflection moments with the older kids and cool down moments with the younger ones. The big kids can either reflection verbally with me or write up a quick reflection, whichever they are most comfortable doing. The younger kids I will ask that they take a cool down break, maybe walk the hallway from front door to back door, or just hang out at the back of the room for a moment. I haven't finalized what would be best for them yet. Cool down activity probably depends on the student.

Relationships are so important with your students. I am always striving to have a warm and inviting environment within my classroom.
Something new that I really want to try is the "Cool down" method. I think this method will be so much better than to say you'll stay in for recess or whatever consequence you come up with. Are they learning or reflecting on what they did? Probably not. I feel it also tells the students you care what they have to say. Another thing I learned new is the Peace Path. Having a path where the students can literally walk through the process of reflecting on the problem. In my class we always talk about the choices they made and why they made those choices. I want to make sure I understand both sides of the story, to whatever issue we have. I want my students to feel loved and that they can come to me with anything.

I really enjoyed reading this article. Being positive is really something I try to live by everyday. Positive attitudes is something that I told my students they need to have in my classroom from day #1. Something that I have started in my classroom is establishing relationships first and then all the curriculum and work comes next. The first couple weeks of school we really worked on relationships and creating friendships with everyone in our class. We started each morning with a morning meeting talking about positive things in our lives and creating those relationships with all the students in my classroom. I really like the "class council" method from the article. I am excited to implement this into my own classroom and see how well the students do with it. In these meetings we will go over class rules, routines, school rules and routines, and any other behavior problems that have happened that week. I really like this method because it allows the students to talk about the rules and routines and keep everyone involved. The goal of my classroom is to create a positive environment for my students to come everyday, and that is a goal that I hope to achieve every time they walk into my class.

I really enjoyed reading this article and all of the great ideas it shared. I push teacher and peer relationships, and I believe it is a key to a successful classroom. On Friday's we have Bucket-Filler Friday and we do an activity giving compliments to each other writing on a sticky note. I then have them do an activity with a partner. I thought the "Cool Down" toolbox was a great idea and something I want to implement in our classroom. Giving students tools they need to calm down, allows them to step back and regroup! What a great idea to stay positive for both teacher and student! :)

Being a 5-12 teacher relationships look different for me from class to class. the relations i have built with my High School students is a little different then my MS and Elementary kids. This year i have implemented a new way for our rules. I gave each of the students two post-it notes and on those notes they wrote down what is expected from them in this class, and on the other is what is expected from others in this class. I felt that this was a great way for those quieter students to have a say. My expectations with my high school students are high, and I tend to keep that expectation all the way down to my elementary students. The thing that I took away from this article was that I should continue to have this high expectation but not to get so upset at the students when they do not succeed. Be frustrated with them, not at them. I tend to forget that these students are still learning. Don't sweat the small stuff!

The emotional well being of my students is my top priority. I do my best to be a positive person and influence with all the people I come in contact with. Daily, the roller coaster we ride as teachers challenges that. Nurturing positive attitudes in them is a big job. We need to set the example.
