According to Christensen (2020), researchers at Anhui Medical University did a study based upon students in the 4th-8th grades and the negative impact of Covid-19 on them and their emotional wellbeing. Due to the students being seperated abruptly in April, they were not able to get that closure with their friends and family that was needed. When delving deep into the survey, in November 2019, only 19% of students recorded depressive symptoms. In comparison to 25%, a 6% increase of students who now felt these depressive symptoms (Christensen, 2020). They also looked at suicide attempts. In November 2019 the year before, the percentage of suicide attempts was at 3%. In May of the following year, it was at 6.4% which doubled from the previous school year (Christensen, 2020). When looking at the importance of in-person learning, when students are not in school it makes it much more difficult to identify and issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts, any type of abuse, and more (Christensen, 2020). All of the above mentioned issues then negatively effect everything from student performance to attendance to behaviors within the online school.

The Program

The school program that would be used would be similar in nature to the program in South San Antonio ISD called the South San Mobile Wellness partnership (Taboada, 2020). This program partners with 6 agencies that includes a place called "Clarity." Clarity is a campus based counseling and therapy group who provides not only therapy and counseling to students, but also to families and staff members (Taboada, 2020). There are similar programs across Texas that are now in major school districts providing free counseling to students, families, and staff. There is also online counseling available to all of these families and students that is free (Taboada, 2020). Free is a key word here because a lot of students in the area that I work at are low-income students, so that is a big driving factor. The providers at another clinic called Vida Clinic provide a holistic care package to the students and families. These have then been found to increase attendance, performance, and behavior (Taboada, 2020). With the additional programs to support, school counselors would be able to reach further to others.

School Counselors-
School counselors will be key for leading this program. They will be the middle-person for everybody to pass information through. They will be there as an advocate for their students, and they will always have the ability to adapt and be flexible with needed. They will help guide the program along and offer support.

Teachers-
Teachers will have to be aware of students in their classroom who may need to be identified as a student who would benefit from these services. Teachers will be key to this because they will be working first-hand with students on a normal basis.

Administration-
Will be there to help support teachers and school counselors through this transition into this new program. They will be there to help guide parents and families who have questions.

Parents-
Parents are important in this as well because they have to be the ones to help their children get to these services or get online to these services. They will be a key point of input and feedback to the program.

Community Members-
The program will rely on community members support and output of different companies who would be willing to help be a part of this program. They would also need to be having inputs on the program itself and how to respond to it.

There will also be some efforts placed upon checking in with students using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, Posner et al. (C-SSRS). This will help us to identify whether or not some students have suicidal ideations, so that we can use prevention techniques.

Progress will be monitored by using the data released from the school in these age ranges of students who have killed themselves. It will then also be used in comparison to the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale that will be used multiple times through out the months. This will help us to also identify any students who were already showing symptoms from this rating scale.

By being aware of the students who do have suicidal ideations, and by having those who are closest to these students be aware of that is an excellent act of prevention. It will also help us collect data as those stakeholders could have some more insight that we don't.
