Freud believed dreams represent taboos that our conscious minds suppress, whereas as Jung believed all humans share collective unconscious raw material used to create a dreamscape. They both agree however that dreams are messages scripted and produced by our unconscious mind.

Some scientist believe our brains act like an offline computer when we sleep. In other words it is still active updating information, but it is all previous information we've been exposed too, no new outside information is coming in. They believe dreams are a quick snapshot of these so called "updates" .
