Men were the more favored gender during this time, whereas women were viewed as the submissive gender. Throughout a women's whole life, she would be under the control of a man. First she would be under the control of her father and/or another male relative, then she would be passed off into her husband's control when the time came.

Most women of this time did not own land due to either not being allowed and/or not having the money. There were some women in city-states like Sparta and Delphi that owned land, however these women were of extremely high status and class.

Although women had freedoms in other city-states, the women from Athens did not. It was the fact that women couldn't own land that kept them from becoming citizens in Athens. Women in Athens were viewed as unnecessary and burdens. They were so low in the social class system that slaves had more freedoms than them. Women were not allowed to go to school or walk where they wanted to.

Due to Sparta being a military society, the men were always away from home. It was quickly noticeable that women required more rights in order for Sparta to continue functioning properly. They were in charge of cooking, keeping their house clean and tidy, and taking care of the children. Most women were highly educated and had more freedoms when it came to how they dressed.
