It was the fact that women couldn't own land that kept them from becoming citizens in Athens. Women in Athens were viewed as unnecessary and burdens. They were so low in the social class system that slaves had more freedoms than them. It was quickly noticeable that women required more rights in order for Sparta to continue functioning properly. They were in charge of cooking, keeping their house clean and tidy, and taking care of the children.
