The migrant workers didn’t necessarily have any other options, while there were other jobs throughout the towns, the ones most willing to hire were the farms and plantations. This going to say that unless they worked hard to save up money, the chance of them having a better life was almost out of the picture.

There were other choices of work for those that had the skills and capabilities in order to do such things, but for those that did not have any sort of skills, they most likely did not. As an example, Lennie most likely didn't have much of a choice, considering his mental limits. But, his build did allow him to be able to work on ranches like they do, and if George had decided to cut Lennie loose, he might have been able to find a better job elsewhere.
