1. Parents in joint custody "often try to create living arrangements that support the child" because both parents will often get along if they have joint custody (Wilson, 2019, p.352).
2. Parents in joint custody sometimes have parents that "try to locate close to each other" to support the child's needs and allow both parents to see and connect to the child (Wilson, 2019, p.352).
3. Parents in joint custody typically want to "impose minimal interruptions to their" child's routine (Wilson, 2019, p.352).

Parents in joint custody may face struggles because the relationship between parents may be negative therefore impacting the child negatively. Thus, joint custody may "not be appropriate in situations where there is a lot of conflict between parents"(2011).
3. The child may face "difficulty with the transitions involved every few days" (2011).

After researching this topic I see that joint custody can have a positive or negative impact on children and families mainly depending on the parents relationship with each other. The best way I think to overcome some of the challenges faced when working with joint custody families is insuring both parents feel included and positive relationships are built with both parents to aid in communication. I think for the child having a supportive consistent daycare environment will be best for them. I also think that having materials that aid children in recognizing their emotions and feelings will be important because children in these families may be facing emotions that children from traditional families may not face often.

I’ve learnt a lot doing this assignment. I didn’t know much on joint custody but through the process of the assignment I’ve then been able to gain knowledge such as there is positives and negatives. I’ve been able to see that it’s the relationship between both parents of the child and having that understanding and communication between the two that will make the relationship stronger. I’ve never been affected but I’ve known people who have and this really opened my eyes to how we can help children through this process if it were or when a child comes into our center with this situation and how we can meet their needs such as showing emotions and how to express them in a positive way and being that support away from home.
