This caused the United States to declare war on Japan the very next day December 8, then 3 days after  on December 11 Japan's Axis Ally, declared war on the United States and this forced the United States to enter a two-front war. In the end, as a result, approximately 120,000 civilians died and Japan formally surrendered in September 1945.</p>]]></description>

And when the killing centers were operational, German SS and police forces liquidated the ghettos and deported Jews by rail to those killing centers. The victims of Belzec were mainly Jews from the ghettos of southern Poland, and included German, Austrian, and Czech Jews held in the Piaski and Izbica transit ghettos in Lublin District.</p>]]></description>

Japanese demands included that the United States end its sanctions against Japan, cease aiding China in the Second Sino-Japanese war, and allow Japan to access the resources of the Dutch East Indies. </p>]]></description>

The surrender was signed in Tokyo Bay aboard the American battleship USS Missouri. Japan's leaders (the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War, also known as the "Big Six") were privately making entreaties to the publicly neutral Soviet Union to mediate peace on terms more favorable to the Japanese. While maintaining a sufficient level of diplomatic engagement with the Japanese to give them the impression they might be willing to mediate.</p>]]></description>
