Michael is the main character. He is a ten years old boy. He has a new born baby sister who is very ill and they don't know if she will survive. He is very concerned about her well being and if she is going to survive. He worries a lot and is very anxious. 
(Relationships) He has caring parents, but they are distracted with his baby sister and renovation of their new house. He has friends at school, but he doesn't want to share his worries with them.
He meets the creature Skellig, in their garage, who scares and fascinates him. Skellig needs help, but doesnt want any. Still Micheal feels it is important to help him. The Skelligcharacter develops during the story. Skellig is dark dirty and hostile,  By help and love from open minded children he becomes nicer and more lovable. He gets to know his neighbour girl Mina and they eventually become good friends. She challenges him to observe his surroundings more cloesly and he becomes more interested in the nature.
