For the countryside I believe that they are older more quaint homes. The houses in the countryside are probably less expensive because of the size but in Paris they are probably more expensive because it is a expensive city to live in and there are not a lot of large apartments so that means the ones that are large can be really expensive.

There are a few differences between a house and a home. Firstly a home can be a smaller place like an apartment while a house is a house, a larger independent building. The first difference is based off physical characteristics while the second is based off of how people 'relate' to the place. A home is a base for people where they spend at least some of their personal time and where they interact with family and friends. While a house is just a building where one might live.

I chose the region, Provence. It is in the southeastern part of France and it borders Italy. It has a lot of farmland and crops. 'Le mas en Provence' housing is so unique because it is more rural and is more of a farm house. This housing is found in Provence, Midi, parts of Italy and parts of Spain. This type of house isn't built anymore, has an older architectural style, and uses lots of stone and wood. The land in Provence is very flat, for crops, and most houses have lots of land. This allows for bigger houses than other places in France to be made. Also, the Alps border this region which supplies wood and stone.

I chose the home style of La malouinière located in the region Bretagne. These homes are mansion homes that are very large and elegant. They were built in the countryside during the late 17th century by rich fleet owners. Now days many of these structures are used as museums and not for living in.They are considered very bleak with gardens providing shade and large gates making the property very private. They are unique due to there size and other features like many many large windows. Climate played somewhat of a role in the creation of these homes. Architects decided to plaster the walls in white to fight against salt and humidity. The inside features wood furniture, marble and porcelain.

https://www.brittany-tourism.com/discover-ille-et-vilaine/culture-and-heritage/the-malouinieres-mansion-houses/

I chose the home type of a Chalet. A chalet is most commonly found in the Alpine areas including the French, Swiss, German, Italian alps. These houses have been used for a long time. However, they used to be used as warehouses for dairy cattle farmers. They would bring their herds in the summer and would often have multiple chalets at different altitudes. When winter set in, they would bring the cattle down and return in the spring. Today, Chalets are no longer used as warehouses for cattle herders but rather as luxury ski homes. People of many different social classes live in these chalets as they come in many different sizes. However, most chalets are massive and house rich people. They are mainly made of wood as trees are abundant in the mountains. The base of the house is made of stone, and then above it most of the rest is made of wood but can also include some stone. These chalets have extensive, slanted roofs so that snow does not damage the roof/chalet. They have many pretty balconies made of wood, a wood that has first been dried. Much of the interior is still a very rustic style, but many owners like to include more modern style interior.

https://www.skiingproperty.com/2020/08/05/what-is-a-french-chalet-ski-accommodation/

I chose the region Alsace. It is the Germanic region of France, and there remains a strong Germanic influence on the half-timbered houses of Alsace. Half-timbered houses are unique because of their bright colors and famous half-timbering; hence the name. They are different from timbered houses, often because of their height, as they were usually built with three or four floors. This construction method of half-timbering dates back to the Roman Empire and gained popularity during the Middle Ages in France. Timber was seen as a good insulator, making it a fitting material for use in Alsace with its cold winters. The steep roof was designed to prevent snow from collecting. Because of a large amount of wood resources in the forests of Vosges in Alsace, timber became the main choice of construction, leading to the timber used to build these houses. That is how the climate played into these houses. The reason for these square patterns of the timber beams is not just for strength, but also for symbolic representation for the owner of the house. Often times, the corner post would be decorated with symbols, patterns, or characters. Since the 15th century to the late 19th century, half-timbered houses were built in France. Nowadays, most of these houses are used as B&Bs or hostels although some of them remain family homes. Fishermen, millers, and tanners once lived and worked in Strasbourg, Alsace. This was because of the streets were built level with the waterways. I would say many different types of people lived in these houses, but mostly middle or working class people during the Middle Ages.

https://www.uniqueretreats.com/traditional-french-architecture-half-timbered-houses/

https://www.completefrance.com/french-property/half-timbered-houses-in-france-8788738

https://about-france.com/regions/alsace.htm

https://www.french-property.com/regions/alsace/half-timbered/

https://www.visit.alsace/en/223007616-The-Petite-France-quarter/

The type of house that I chose to research are the cottages, or chaumières, in Normandy. This house is different from many others houses because of its unique roof. The roof is thatched and is usually made of rye, seeds, or wheat. These houses are typically found in upper Normandy (which is in Northwest France), but they are also seen in Europe. They are still built today using local materials. Climate and geography play a role in the decoration of this house because the irises that are traditionally planted around the house are taken care of perfectly by the climate of Normandy. The type of people who live in these cottages are farmers or people with less money. Farmers and people with less money live in these homes because they can build them for cheaper. It is less expensive because they can use mostly local materials to make the chaumières.

Link: https://www.french-property.com/regions/haute_normandie/thatched-chaumieres/

The roof is asymmetrical and descends on the side. It is pretty stocky as well. The region that these types of houses is called The Basque Region. It is found in the Southwest of France. Basque Houses are were built after the mid-15th century. They are not commonly built today. In the Basque Region, it rains a lot so that is why the houses have slanted roofs. The type of people who live in this house are normally if they have a long tradition or connections with it. This region is also pretty good for agriculture which is why a lot of people who live in these houses farm or do stuff similar to that. An interesting fact is about the Basque peppers.

I chose the region Île-de-France, which is a region in north-central France. The type of house that I chose from this region is the La meulière. It is made of millstone and limestone. These materials were quite popular during the 20th century in Paris. Meaning that most of these houses were built between 1880 and 1930, but this type of stone was still used up until 1950. These houses were made by opulent Paris residents, who wanted to leave the city and take advantage of the new railroad tracks. However, some of the new residents were part of the working class, who wanted to join the expanding workforce outside of Paris. Something unique about this type of house is that there are different sizes/styles of the same house, meaning some were seen as vacation homes for the rich while others were seen as modest homes for the working class. The main material of the houses being limestone and millstone also added to their uniqueness. Geography did play into the making of these houses since they are located in the countryside and were made in a rustic country style. A fun fact about La meulière houses is that they have very unique color schemes, usually being brown and red.

Link: https://www.connexionfrance.com/article/Practical/Property/Gritstone-means-villas-in-the-Paris-banlieues-are-well-hard

Something that makes Provence France different is the beautiful landscape. It has a Mediterranean climate. The housing I did my project on is usually located in Provence but is also found in midi regions in France and in Spain. A mas is almost always rectangular, with two sloping roofs. This type of house isn't made anymore and most of them have turned into very expensive homes or vacation homes. The climate did come into play for how this house was built, for example, they always face south to offer protection against the mistral wind coming from the north. There are no windows facing north and on all other sides, windows are narrow to protect against the heat of the summer and the cold of the winter. Lastly, the type of people who lived there used to be all types but now it is becoming more wealthy.
https://tripusafrance.com/9-things-provence-is-famous-for/
https://boston.consulfrance.org/French-Corner-Discover-Provence-May-2016
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mas_(Mediterranean_farmhouse)

I chose the basque house the basque house is a white house with a low asymmetrical roof and half-timbering. What makes basque houses unique is that they have four facades or faces to protect the people there from the weather. They also have white facades that are made from white lime. the white lime gives the house a very pure white and recognizable appearance. They also have red half-timbering which are red beams that make the framework of the wall. Basque houses are only found in the Basque country. The Basque country is in the southwestern part of France there is lots of rain and there are 120 inches of rain per year there. In the Basque country there is a very old language that they keep preserved. The reason they have the low and symetrical roofs is because of all of the rain that comes down. Basque houses are not really built today but people did build them in the 15th century. People who live in basque country usually are indigenous and are related to the culture. A fact is that people in spain also live in basques since basque country is close to the border region is languedoc
https://www.valentinimmobilier.com/maison-basque-quelles-sont-les-caracteristiques-de-ce-type-de-maison/

For this research project about different houses in regions of France, I chose the meulière. Located in the Île de France Paris region, meulière are millstone houses. What makes it unique is the stone that is used to build these houses. Meulière is a reddish brownstone and they are connected with this lime plaster to create the walls. These were made all around the city of Paris. When they were made, wealthy Parisians wanted to take advantage of the land around the city and the railways recently built. These railways were taken as an escape from the city. This represents how geography plays a part. However, these houses were occupied by more commonly the rich, the working class also moved towards the Made in 1880 all the way until 1930, the production of these houses came to an end. Although, these stones were used until 1950. As for the question, on how the climate has impacted the structure and designs of these, I, unfortunately, do not have the answer. Searching through multiple websites I sadly could not find any information on these. Nonetheless, something special about the meulières is the fact that all of them have their own particular style and design chosen by the owner.

links and citations:

https://www.connexionfrance.com/article/Practical/Property/Gritstone-means-villas-in-the-Paris-banlieues-are-well-hard

https://aladyinfrance.com/parisian-stone-called-meuliere/#:~:text=Meuli%C3%A8re%20houses%20were%20built%20from,most%20often%20reddish%20in%20colour.

It is generally a longhouse built with a residential part and a barn part. It was used to shelter animals, men, and tools. Longères are found in almost all regions but especially in the north and west of France, particularly Brittany, Normandy, Haut-de-France, Limousin, and Pays de la Loire. Longhouses are still built today as they are used for agricultural use. Longhouses are in a region that is a peninsula, and since these parts of France are major food sources, they have more access to the sea, which means they need more space for stocking up and storage spaces. Mostly farmers and fishermen, and agricultural workers need a place to live that is the simplest and least costly form of housing and longhouses have the space so it is perfect for them.

Links:
https://thegoodlifefrance.com/guide-to-french-property-styles/
https://www.completefrance.com/french-property/buying-and-selling/3-french-property-styles-explained-8348528

I chose the region Alpes. The Alpes is in the South Western part of France. In the Alpes the house that is most common there is the chalet. The abundance of wood there means that the chalets are built out of wood. The base of the house is made out of stone. Something that's unique about the house is that the upper floors project over the lower floors and there are usually multiple balconies with carved railings. Chalets are still built today. Before, they were built to house dairy cattle herders. Now they are a destination for skiing and hikers. Chalets are built to withstand the cold snow of the Alpes. Overhanging eaves allows snow to easily fall off. A central fireplace allows inhabitants to stay warm in the cold winter.

https://www.britannica.com/technology/chalet
https://www.angi.com/articles/what-chalet-style-house.htm

My region of choice was Brittany, the type of home is La Malouinière. This home was used by rich privateers so they could be away from the cramped city of Saint-Malo. These privateers, pirates serving the King, were very rich men generally. The majority of Malouinières were built between 1680 and 1730 they are not really made anymore. Geography does play a big role in the location of the Malouinières, they are normally within 12 miles of Saint-Malo so they could access their ships without having to take many hours or even days ride. These houses tended to be perfectly symmetrical and were inspired by military architecture. Actually they were inspired by a French military engineer named Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban whose fortifications played a contributing role in European history until the 19th century when I assume the fortifications fell out of favor to modern architecture. The outside was usually plastered in white to fight the salt and humidity of the area. These residences were designed for relative seclusion and privacy so gates, large shrubs, and walls were very common along with the property being surrounded by woods.

They were built in the early 1500s. The house is a very traditional one, and it's not one an average family would live in. Most people who lived in these houses were from traditional families. It is easy to recognize these houses, as they are found only in the Basque region. They're usually used for farming and agriculture due to the region it's in.
https://www.pyreneanexperience.com/the-basque-house-a-mixed-blessing/

I chose the style of home called la Malouinière which is located in Brittany, France. The Brittany region is a quite large one that is located in the North-west corner of France where the ocean meets the land. The houses that are part of this region are elegant mansions that were built in the 17th century by wealthy shipowners. These upscale residents planned to make these houses their holiday homes in order to get away from the cramped city for a couple months of the year. They are very unique because of their massive size and standout traditions of house-building that are not as commonly used today. An example of this are the big extravagant windows that decorate the exterior of the house, and the rarity of shutters pairing with those windows. This contrasts the modern houses which shutters are frequently used to have privacy from other residents. Theses type of homes are no longer built today and as explained, go against many modern french home traditions. Climate played somewhat of a big part when it came to the materials that these houses would be built with. The well-known white facade of the exterior was actually plastered by architects to keep away humidity and salt. The interior of the house is known to be very lavish with decorations from the owners memorable trips, luxurious wood for appliances, parquet and marble floors, and porcelain from Compagnie des Indes. As you can infer from these wealthy materials, the owners of these houses were very well-off, returning from expeditions where they would steal enemies ships and take whatever laid aboard.

Link: https://www.brittany-tourism.com/discover-ille-et-vilaine/culture-and-heritage/the-malouinieres-mansion-houses/

Le Chalet - Alpes/Swiss Chalet is a house or a cottage made of wood that is typically located in the Alpine region. They are still built today and are commonly used by people who enjoy skiing and/or hiking because they are usually located on steep mountains. These houses used to be used for dairy farming but are now mainly located in the Alpine region. Because they are mostly located in the Alpine region they have sloped roofs to avoid snow accumulation and have wide edges in the front of the house. The chalet house is unique because of its triangular shape and overhanging eaves. They are almost always two stories high and have many windows. The footprint for these houses is usually pretty small considering they are meant to be built on small, steep areas, but they have high ceilings which make the house appear bigger and more open on the inside.

https://www.mydomaine.com/chalet-style-house-5203573#:~:text=Chalet%2Dstyle%20houses%20are%20possibly,on%20top%20of%20the%20house.

I chose to write about Switzerland for this project. A typical home in Switzerland is a chalet or any single/detached house. A large part of the Swiss population lives in single houses rather than apartments or rented homes. Chalets are found all over Switzerland since there is a lot of snow. Swiss architecture is unique because it mixes a lot of different styles together including Roman, Gothic, and Modern. The Roman style has more rounder shapes, the Gothic style has more points and Modern architecture is more rectangular. The unique thing about chalets is that they are built to withstand the changing climates. Architects primarily use wood and stone to build them and they have a sloped roof for snow and ice to slide off of. These homes are still built for many different people all across the country. More common homes in Switzerland include older, historic homes that have been preserved throughout the years. These homes are more commonly made of stone and brick and have a rustic style. There was also a lumber shortage when these older houses were being made. The oldest wood house in Switzerland dates back to around the year 1100.
Swiss homes are different from American homes because American homes are more modern and vary a lot more. In the U.S., there are beach houses, winter houses, cabins, etc. Also, in Switzerland, houses are typically smaller and occupy less people (2-3). Lastly, Switzerland has a higher population density so the homes have less yard space and are closer together.

Links:
https://www.alfred-mueller.ch/en/forum/article/how-switzerland-lives
https://switzerland-tour.com/information/architecture
https://studyinginswitzerland.com/switzerland-architecture/https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/-swisshistorypics_old-houses-tell-switzerland-s-story/44549934

Picture:
https://www.expatica.com/ch/housing/buying/sell-house-switzerland-195315/

A large percentage of Haiti lives in rural areas and each home is made of materials such as local grasses, metal, plastic, and palm leaves for the roof. The walls and floor are made of mud and they are usually two-room homes and are small. There is no running water and electricity and the bathroom is a hole either inside or farther from the house. These houses are still built today and it takes $8,000 to build each home. Something unique about this style of home is that each house is typically built in a compound and is built by the head of the household. This house is different from the U.S. because it is smaller and the materials are different, American homes typically use brick or concrete, or wood. They are different from french homes because many homes are apartments or made of stone and wood.
https://www.britannica.com/place/Haiti/Housing

The region that I chose was Morocco. There are different styles of houses in Morocco but I decided to learn about the riads. The riads are one of the two main types of traditional Moroccan houses. There are often two or more stories around an interior garden centered around a fountain. In my opinion, the most unique about riads is the interior garden and fountain in the center. Riads were normally home to wealthier families in Morocco such as merchants and courtiers who were able to build mansions that included interior gardens. The walls and floors are made of Tadelakt which is a waterproof plaster surface that are often used for baths and sinks. The difference between houses in Morocco and houses in the U.S is the style of the house. In France, people choose the style of the house which is kind of like this.

Links:
-https://theculturetrip.com/africa/morocco/articles/a-brief-history-of-riads-moroccos-exquisite-accommodation/

I chose Switzerland as my region. A typical home in Switzerland is a detached house. Most detached homes are occupied by one or two people even with the amount of space they have. Detached homes are nicer, bigger versions of apartments. Since these houses are extremely nice and are meant for 1 to 2 people, only 28% of the Swiss population live in a detached house. Not only is it expensive and not typically for families, but people complained that there was an excessive amount of space, poor exploitation of limited land resources, and excessive mobility costs. Since then regular apartments are being more at use, especially for families. People think that apartments are fit to their needs better. Swiss homes are elegant and fit to your specific style and taste.

Links:
https://www.alfred-mueller.ch/en/forum/article/how-switzerland-lives

A typical house in Quebec is an old English home. In cities like Montreal, it is usually a three-story townhouse that is split into 3-5 apartments. A unique feature of the apartments is their spiral staircase that connects the appartments. A notable feature of an Old Quebec house is the tall door with a window above it to let light in. The roof is also slanted so the snow slides off more easily. It is different from homes in America because some homes there have flat roofs, which are not good for snow since the roof will cave in if the snow gets too heavy. This sloped roof design is useful because Canada is in the north so there is more snow.

In 1985, Old Quebec was a declared UNESCO World Heritage site. Half of the houses in Old Quebec were built before 1850, and Old Quebec is the only city in North America that is walled. Old Quebec has 1400 buildings built from the seventeenth century that serve many purposes like commercial, cultural, financial, institutional, military, religious and residential. Old Quebec houses have a military or Château that has fortifications like a gate. The Château style is characterized by the elements borrowed from the middle ages like stone masonry, red brick, and neo-Gothic models.
Link:
https://www.peopleareculture.com/old-quebec/

Traditional Moroccan homes are called Riads, and can be found in the older parts of cities, such as Marrakesh. Riad architecture dates back to the Roman era, and is supposed to be modeled after a typical Roman villa. The word ‘Riad’ comes from the Arabic term for garden, as their most important aspect is a central garden-or courtyard. A courtyard is the center of a riad house, with multiple floors surrounding it. Rooms on the higher floors typically have balconies and windows looking inward to the courtyard as opposed to outward facing, which keeps the courtyard the center of all activities in the house. High ceilings give the impression of having more space. The lower rooms in a riad may have doors or curtains, but it is common for them to be open–the purpose being the relaxation and entertainment of visitors. There is no roof in the courtyard, and it is very private from the outside streets and noises. Often times you can find fruit trees or fountains in it as well. A modern touch in some riads is the presence of swimming pools, or hammams. It also does not rain a lot in Morocco, so furniture is left out in courtyards. During the summertime, because of the heat, the design of the riad has many shady spots for inhabitants to relax in. While the outside seems to be dull and plain, the floors and walls of riads tend to be decorated by wood, mosaic, and metal artisans. One of the differences between homes in the U.S. and Moroccan homes is that Riads have very few to zero windows on the external walls, so the only way to enter a riad is from the outside door. This architectural style is to give the occupants privacy and to protect against the weather. The emphasis on the interior and inner walls of a riad is the main difference between U.S. homes and homes in Morocco. Homes in the U.S. often have decoration and gardens surrounding the outside of houses, and homes are usually painted in various colors. The exterior of Moroccan homes are dull and not much to look at because of the detailed focus on the inside and the courtyard.

https://atlantismorocco.com/riad-an-example-of-moroccan-architecture/

https://friendlymorocco.com/culture/moroccan-riads-architecture-and-history/

https://abdessamia.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/moroccan-traditional-houses/

The typical houses in Switzerland are Swiss chalets along with detached houses. A detached house is like a single family home that is not connected to any other building. The foundation of a Swiss chalet is often stone or cement and it is exposed on the downhill side. Copious windows and broad galleries (usually there, though not always present) are there to unite indoors and outside, an important function for a population who enjoy and do a lot of outdoor activities. The galleries are bounded by a railing that caps vertical boards. They are closely spaced and sometimes decoratively carved. Window boxes, a lot of the times planted with geraniums even to this day, offer a bit of color. The roof is also slanted to account for snow, so the snow slides off more easily. Swiss chalets are different from American houses because they are more rustic and have a cottage feel while most American homes are more modern. American homes also are very different from each other. There are apartments, farm houses, family homes, group homes, flats, and many more in the US. There are also less people/house in Switzerland.

https://artsandcraftshomes.com/house-styles/the-swiss-chalet

A traditional Moroccan house is called a riad. These houses are designed to be simple and inexpensive. They traditionally have flowers in four planting beds. They will also usually have a central fountain. All of the windows in this house face the inner courtyard for privacy, like most homes in France, but unlike houses in the US. Moroccan houses in warmer, drier climates are made of bricks with hay and mud because there is not very much available timber to build houses with. In the more cold and wet climates, houses are made with modern bricks and cement. A downside to Moroccan homes is that unlike American homes, these houses don’t have air conditioning or heating. All in all, Moroccan homes are simple yet elegant, and a great option to stay in if you don’t mind the desert heat.

Links:

http://ordinarywonder.com/a-walk-through-a-typical-moroccan-home/

https://www.onthegotours.com/blog/2018/08/what-to-expect-when-staying-in-a-moroccan-riad/#:~:text=What%20is%20a%20riad%3F,fountain%2C%20but%20many%20variations%20exist

My decision for this project was to research the houses in Québec. Québec has a variety of different styles of homes, from isolated houses such as a united house, bungalows, cottages, e.t.c. Homes in Québec have influences from all over Europe. There are houses in Québec that have a more English style; these houses started being made in around 1815. You can find these houses in the oldest parts of the city, the Latin Quarter. British settlers in Québec City wanted a feeling of home. Eventually, these houses became the typical home you see around Québec. However, these are not an exact replica of those in Europe, the french-speaking middle class were unwilling to adapt to the three stories of these houses. At the time, one story houses meant that you were in poverty, and buildings with more than two stories hinted that there was most commonly more than one family living in that particular home. So the houses were made to be two stories, but eventually, three-story homes became the standard. Another example of a variation of a house in Québec and one in London was that the houses were long and narrow, they were set back from the streets to be more private and avoid the gaze of those around. A long driveway-like lane led to a stable behind the house. Regardless of the homes in London, Québec was the opposite, they could not create a more private area because of the french-style lots that were shallow. In Old Québec, the faces of the houses that overlooked the streets were all over the street. In order to still have privacy, the first floor was above street level and there were steps that led to the front door. Because there was no back lane, a yard and stable were accessed by a carriage and a gate facing the street. Additionally, houses in Québec had ornate entrances, the front door aligned with the windows on the ground floor, the doors were tall and oftentimes had a window above to bring light. Other unique features of houses in Old Québec were the sloped roofs, unlike the flat roofs in London. Sloped roofs were a necessity because if they had flat roofs they would likely collapse due to the weight of snow. And inhabitants would use their attics as living spaces so architects thought that gabled roofs would be better. Another feature is the tile and slate used, in London these were not suitable for the cold weather the residents in Québec were put up with so they built houses with tin. This is unlike in France where houses in the south were made of stone, and houses made in the Alps out of wood. Nonetheless, there are similarities to a French home, they were able to keep the French way of building a chimney into the high common wall separating the houses, and also served as a fire stop. How are these houses different from ones in the U.S.? Well, not all areas of the U.S. are cold and need so much insulation, but in Québec good insulation is a must. Again, bringing up the roofs, the ones in Québec are slanted whereas some homes in America have flatter roofs. The typical house in Old Québec has evolved over time, they now have their own identities, as they are viewed as a marriage of French and British culture. It is a combination of the architectural traditions that come from France, and the lifestyle of the UK adjusted to suit the local climates.

links:
https://www.ville.quebec.qc.ca/en/citoyens/patrimoine/quartiers/vieux_quebec/interet/maison_type_du_vieux_quebec.aspx
https://www.privilegeimmobilier.ca/en/guide-des-differents-types-de-maisons-au-quebec/

For this project, I chose to write about Switzerland homes which differ immensely from the houses that we studied in France as well as the houses that we live in, in the United States. The houses that are common in Switzerland are chalet houses and detached houses. These detached houses are very popular in Switzerland and most residents dream to have them, mostly because it’s significantly more spacious than terraced houses or townhouses. Detached houses are a single house that is not attached to any other housing development and is individual. Chalet houses are also very popular in Switzerland because even though they were originally intended for uneven and harsher weather areas, today chalet houses can be built in just about any part of the country. These homes come in all different shapes and sizes but are best known for their dramatic and triangular built style. Chalet houses were originally only built of wood, since that was all that was around, and the more originally inspired ones are centered around that idea. The foundation of this house is made of cement as well as stone. Traditional broad windows and galleries are sometimes present not always though and serve to show the beautiful scenery outside the home and give an amazing view. There are window boxes in most that offer the house a good chance to be colorful and give a little color to the plain brown design. The houses that are described as chalets are usually beautifully and creatively carved inside as well as out. Another unique feature is that these houses can go beyond being a single family home and be a shop or if bigger, a hotel. I think the main reason why these houses are different from the French and United States houses is their extremely creative architecture as well as the average living space per person in Switzerland being a little lower than the one in the United States.

links:
https://artsandcraftshomes.com/house-styles/the-swiss-chalet
https://www.alfred-mueller.ch/en/forum/article/how-switzerland-lives

The place that I chose was Switzerland. One of the common houses in Switzerland are the chalets. These houses are known for there triangular profile. They have pitched roofs and overhanging eaves. They are usually covered in wooden shingles. These roofs are good for cold climates because when it snows, the snow does not accumulate on the roof. Back when they were first built, they were supposed to be on steep and uneven grounds so the houses had to be smaller. Now these houses come in all different sizes and can fit large families. These houses are usually built with natural materials. The foundation of the house are built with stone and cement while the actual house is usually made with wood. They can be built with all types of wood from all different places around the globe. These houses are almost always 2 stories tall and have tons of windows that fill the house with natural light. The windows are also meant to give a great view of the surroundings outside the house. The inside of the chalet is very open making it feel like a ski lodge. The main room of the house almost always has a fireplace to keep the room warm and helps cancel out the cold air that might be coming from all the windows. Even though these houses are on the smaller side, they have high ceilings that make it feel very big and roomy. These houses were not created by the Swiss, they were created by French and English people who visited and got inspired by the other architecture around it.

I chose to write about the typical Moroccan house. Most people in Haiti live in rural areas. The majority of houses consist of 2-room houses with floors and walls made out of mud and roofs made out of grasses or palm leaves. They could also be constructed out of plastic and made with a corrugated metal roof. The windows don't have panes and have wooden shutters. There's little furniture inside these houses. Most of the time, kitchens are located outside the house. There's no electricity or piped water. There's a latrine some distance away from the house. Houses are built in compounds. In the cities, houses are like the houses in rural areas. Houses are not well made and don't have much structural integrity.
https://www.britannica.com/place/Haiti/Housing

Riad comes from the Arabic word for garden. They have an interior garden which is probably the most famous/standout part of this architecture style and riad really means garden but has become a blanket term for this style of Moroccan architecture. The walls of the interior garden often have Quranic calligraphy due to Moroccos strong connection to Islam, they also commonly contain floral images and patterns, however you will rarely find human images because the Islamic religion prohibits the representation of living figures in decorative arts. The rooms surrounding the interior garden are called bâyts and are usually shared spaces like dining rooms. The lower floors do not feature any windows and the windows on the upper floors are small and high up. Often riads have open roofs which have been turned into living spaces, although rain does enter the property it is not a major concern because of the desert climate in Morocco however it can get rainy near the Mediterranean coastline. The U.S. and France both have architecture built to withstand harsher elements because of the harsher climate in the U.S. and in France. Homes in the U.S. and in France are also different because many of them tend to be more modern and display less of a creative aspect. Riads were built to make an oasis of peace and relaxation.

Sources:
https://theculturetrip.com/africa/morocco/articles/a-brief-history-of-riads-moroccos-exquisite-accommodation/

https://metropolismag.com/projects/the-art-of-the-moroccan-riad/

I chose to research and write about the architecture of Switzerland for this project. I mainly chose this region because I felt that Switzerland has a very interesting geography, but also because it has been influenced in many ways by many other surrounding countries. Their architecture has been influenced by many Germanic and German styles in the south and French influences in the east. Many of their architecture styles include All the major styles including Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical. The geography has also impacted the Architecture because of the Alps in the south and southeast. The most known style of them is the Chalet which is a detached/single house in the mountains. It used to be a home for cattle herders but now is a very popular type of house for winter retreats. The Chalet is a very rustic type house built in the mountains or at the foot of a mountain. These are usually very large built from wood and are built to withstand all types of weather. Other homes in Switzerland include older houses that are made of stone and are preserved through generation.
Swiss homes are different from American homes because American homes are more modern and vary much more. In the U.S., there are also beach houses, condos, etc. However, Swiss homes are much more rustic with wood being the main material.

Links:
https://www.hisour.com/architecture-of-switzerland-34029/

I chose to write about the region of Morocco. In Morocco, the typical home is called a riad. The outer walls of a riad are very plain so you can not tell how elaborate the decor is until you go inside. They can be found in the oldest part of cities such as Marrakesh. The occupants have a lot of privacy due to the few windows on the external walls. In a riad, there is also a courtyard in the center of the house. There is also no roof on the courtyard. Since Morocco gets very hot in the summer the design of the riad makes it possible to find many nice shady spots. It is different from a home in the U.S. because it has a courtyard in the middle of it, it doesn't have many windows, and the entrance is made to be very plain.

https://whereinourworld.weebly.com/inside-a-moroccan-home.html

One type of traditional housing is the “Gingerbread Houses.” This style of housing originated in the late 19th century and was inspired by Parisian architecture. As we learned in class, a woman froze to death on the streets because the cost of housing was too high. The people who live in American suburbs are mostly middle class or higher class people while in France, the people who live there are mostly young people or people who don't have as much money. The houses in American suburbs are a much different style than in France.

American suburbs are not generally thought of as a bad place to live while I think that is what the general idea of what the French ones are. It is also a big difference of who the people are like moderately wealthy people live in the suburbs in America and the low-income housing areas are who lives in the French suburbs.

A traditional home in morocco is called a riad. Riad means interior garden but is now used in Morocco as the type of house. They have open courtyards that is the main part of the house. They usually have a lot of balconies and windows facing the courtyard and have two or more stories. The differences from a house in the US is that these aren’t as modern as houses and mostly all look alike but in the US there are many different types of houses.

I chose to write about Québec. The most common house in Québec is the Old Québec house. It made its debut in 1815 in the Latin Quarter area before spreading throughout the district. A distinguishing feature of these houses is their sloped roofs. They have slopes because flat roofs would not be able to handle the snow. Houses in Old Québec usually have very elaborate entrances. The front door is usually aligned with the ground floor windows. There is some French influence in these houses as inhabitants use the attic as living space, and the houses have brighter rooms and good ventilation.

They also have the French practice of building the chimney into the high common wall that separates the houses and acts as a fire stop.

https://www.ville.quebec.qc.ca/en/citoyens/patrimoine/quartiers/vieux_quebec/interet/maison_type_du_vieux_quebec.aspx

French suburbs are generally for low-income people but in America, the suburbs aren't for low-income people. The American suburbs aren't amazing either and can range from great or not so great.
