While searching for 'The Fountain of Youth', Juan Ponce de Leon claimed land along the Florida coast for the Spanish Crown. He'd return in 1521 to establish his colony but his party was forced to retreat to Cuba. This has helped my ancestors be able to get what they want, to establish a place for their home and children.

Pedro Menendez de Aviles would land at would have been at Saint Augustine, Florida. This was where Juan Ponce was 52 years earlier and at this point, St. Augustine would be under Spanish rule for 256 years and under British rule for 20. This shows that the British have been ruling for years, even now with pop culture. This remains in American and Hispanic culture alike with my step and biological family.

During this span, Don Pedro de Peralta helped settle Santa Fe, Mexico which has made it the oldest capital city in North America. It was the first foreign capital captured by the United States. Even though Don Pedro settled it, the original capital city was established by Don Juan in 1598 in San Juan but was moved to Santa Fe in 1610 by Don Pedro. This is also in similarity to my American ancestors, even though they have lived in a place and helped make it a home for them and neighbors, they had to leave for a better life.

The Spanish priest father Antonio Olivares founded the Mission San Antonio de Valero or the Alamo. It was the first mission in San Antonio. Christians would attempt to convert Native Americans and in 1835, it became a site of rebellion. Christianity remains prevalent in my family, we're a family of baptists and Catholics and this is likely because of the heavy influence that Catholicism has on Hispanic and American culture.

During this year, the Treaty of Cordoba helped establish Mexico's independence from Spain. After the war, Mexico invited Angelo settlers from Texas who were impressed by how inexpensive and available it was. My parents have always been wary of prices and inexpensive things in the market have always drawn their attention because of struggling with money in their early childhood.

Santa Anna along with 1,000 Mexican soldiers stormed the Alamo. They killed most of the soldiers there along with Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and William Travis. They had even killed soldiers who had surrendered. This has affected ancestors of mine who hold their Texan heritage close to them and we went to The Alamo site to where it had occurred.

During this day in 1868, the Fourteenth amendment was created. The Fourteenth Amendment helped grant citizenship to people who were prior slaves. It helped people who were born or live in the U.S. as other ethnicities are seen as citizens of the country. This helped my stepmother's mom become a citizen when she immigrated into the United States.

The United States declared war against Spain and with its major fights in Cuba and the Phillipines. The Spanish-American war went on until December 10, 1898 and finally stopped because of the Treaty of Paris. Spain had finally granted Cuba independence as its own country. This has helped in the long run at least for my families, there haven't been any major fights between the two parties.

From 1910-1917, the Mexican Revolution caused a surge of Mexicans to illegally cross the United States' borders with El Paso, Texas serving as Mexican Ellis Island. According to the U.S. Census, they have tripled from 200,000 to 600,000 in the years from 1910-1930. This helped paved the way for more legal immigration for my step mother's family who came into the states for a more comfortable life.

A few months after the Mexican Revolution period has slowed its works, congress overrode a veto by Woodrow Wilson to pass the immigration act of 1917. It was meant to limit immigration into the United States, it also banned immigrants from going into Asian countries. I'm glad it was overrode because if it still existed today, I may have never had a very loving step family like I do now.
