Francophonie is the ability to speak the French language. French ranks 5th [1] among the most widely spoken languages in the world. The historical contexts of France (colonialism, diffusion of cultural, linguistic and political products) have made it very widespread geographically, with French-speaking communities widely distributed in all five continents and mainly in Europe, Africa and America.

From a linguistic point of view, the term "Francophonie" is the set of countries that have French as their mother tongue and / or official, as well as those in which this language, although not recognized as official, plays the role of second language official "de facto". French is spoken as a primary language by 78 million people and as a second current language by 196 million people.

Cependant, le terme Francophonie a aussi une signification institutionnelle, faisant référence à l'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), créée en 1970 dans le but de regrouper les pays partageant la langue française. Pour être membre de l'OIF, le statut officiel du français n'est pas requis au sein de l'État, en effet l'organisation, outre les pays proprement dits francophones, accueille de nombreux pays dans lesquels le français est simplement enseigné en l'école comme langue étrangère : dans ce cas, les gouvernements s'engagent à promouvoir et à renforcer leur enseignement et à favoriser les échanges entre leur propre pays et les cultures francophones.
