Maps can be so important now but are easily outdated and changing. I wanted it to feel like you were peeling away layers of image upon image. The circular ink drawings are patterns that stuck with me from light fixtures I photographed. I like the idea that these are permanent "fixtures” in society. Both maps and signs are consistent and important but what about in 50 years or even 100. Perhaps these will be merely artefacts from another life. Although I don't plan on continuing with these structures, making them helped me think about textures that I'd like to explore. I really like the contrast between the earthy feeling cardboard and the brutal wire. This means that the fabric is still movable rather than any cracking forming. I am interested in exploring the idea of adding words to this piece, similar to Stefan Brüggemann's 'Hyper-Palimpsest'. I'm unsure at this point what words I would want to add. Perhaps words from the map or the word 'palimpsest' itself. This could even become a sculptural piece in itself, making the design on the fabric less of a focal point. It was suggested that I could add older maps from the same area to build up the layers. I want the pieces to feel confusing and unclear about what it is and when it is. I also like the idea that I have the potential to forge my own narrative, making my own reality. The idea that this could be found in 50 years and taken as a truthful document fascinates me. When I found Satins' work I realised the acetate was not only a solution but an interesting way to add a new material and texture. I found the acetate tracing that I did in black marker less successful than the one in blue. The blue ink stands out and also makes the watercolour painted lines and squares stand out more.
