The most famous traditions of Pisanki – painting and decorating Easter eggs using various techniques, e.g., batik method in Opole Silesia or scratching technique in Lublin and Subcarpathian regions, symbolize new life and the rebirth of nature. Blessing of food – on Holy Saturday, the faithful bring baskets of food to the church, including bread (abundance), salt (purification), and eggs (new life), which, once blessed, are meant to ensure prosperity at home. Palm Sunday – commemorates Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. This is the first day of Easter.

Poles bring baskets of food to churches, including eggs, bread, cold cuts, salt, horseradish, and a lamb made of butter or dough. Each product has symbolic meaning: eggs – life and resurrection, bread – the body of Christ, salt – purification, horseradish – suffering, and the lamb – the sacrifice of Christ. The blessed foods become the basis of the Easter breakfast on Easter Sunday.

In Greece, Easter is one of the most

important religious celebrations of the year. After the midnight church service on Holy Saturday, families return home to eat a traditional soup called magiritsa. Magiritsa is made from lamb offal, fresh herbs, lettuce, and rice, and it is usually finished with an egg-lemon sauce. This dish marks the end of the long fasting period of Lent and is considered a light meal that prepares the stomach for the feast of roasted lamb on Easter Sunday. Magiritsa is not just food, but also a symbol of tradition, family, and celebration. Families gather around the table, share stories, and celebrate the Resurrection together.

No Greek Easter meal is complete without lamp on the spit. This custom turns place in backyards or village squares. The smell of roasting lamp fills the air, drawing people in to share the fun. The lamp is seasoned with care. It has salt, pepper, oregano, and a good amount of olive oil. It cooks slowly over an open fire. This allows the flavors to blend into the meat, making it tasty. Slow cooking makes the lamp very soft, with a crispy outside. As the lamp cooks, it shows togetherness. It brings family and friends together to celebrate Easter Sunday.

The Importance of Lamp in Greek Easter:

The protagonistat the table is the lamp in countless religious stories of Cristianity. Nonetheless, it symbolizes the supreme sacrifice, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who as the "Lamp of God" bore the sins of the world. Lamp plays a big role in many cultures, especially during the Greek Easter feast. It shows the sacrifice of Christ and the joy of his rising from the dead. Eating lamp helps us feel connected to the Lamp of God and celebrates hope for life forever.

The "Burning of Judas" is a traditional Greek Orthodox Easter custom practiced in various regions of Greece, including Rhodes. The ritual takes place on Holy Saturday night, following the midnight Resurrection service. An effigy representing Judas Iscariot—the disciple who betrayed Jesus—is created from old clothes and straw. The effigy is often carried in a procession, hung, and then burned in a large bonfire (known as Kalafounoi) near the church symbolizing the punishment of the traitor who betrayed Jesus. This tradition represents the victory of good over evil and is sometimes used to cast off evil from the past year.

By : Areti
