Our first set of discussions really set the foundations for the end result for the costumes. After reading the script we all began to get ideas of each character. We wanted their characters to already establish their personalities through clothing. This lead to our final descriptions which we took to the directors and producers who then approved and we then proceeded to source costumes.

Using Pinterest and Mood boards became really significant in the costume process. I created these using an app called Shuffles which is owned by the creators of Pinterest which allowed me to use all the images I had compiled from Pinterest onto separate mood boards for each character making them easy for the directors and producers to see our vision. As costumes play a vital part in storytelling this really helps us looking for costumes in wardrobe. We then presented our ideas as a group and changed anything the directors and produces wanted to add.

Sourcing Props

When it came to sourcing props for this film. We knew we had to be strategic and resourceful due to the budget. The goal was to minimise spending as much as we could, so we approached each prop choice with creativity and practicality. We divvied out props for each member of the props team so we could be quick and efficient when gathering them. For me, I was in charge of get getting party poppers and confetti for the character of Jasmine which I got from Tesco as they had a large variety and I could get several for a small amount. For the house scene I sourced clothes from the costume department and my own house, and also brought some potted plants from my own bedroom, which helped make the space feel authentic and personal without affecting the budget. Marla's character also had a spiritual element and required several different crystals for the therapy scene. To avoid expensive specialty shops, I was able to bring in some of my own crystals from home and the other props members to decide which ones would be best for the scene. For Elliot, we had to quickly craft labels as our original idea fell through and we decided to use post it notes. We also found some stickers at B&M that we thought would go really well. With his character and bought them at a very low price. Overall, with the props I was able to source I was able to make minimal use of the budget by using things I already had and also things I could use with the university resources.

I booked us a costume department induction and we quickly got to work grabbing ideas for each character all while communicating with the actors as some of them were able to bring in items of their own and we were able to use things of their own within their costumes. We did this in the first two weeks of planning, therefor allowing us to essentially not use the budget up until the stickers we needed for one of the characters.

We had the most choices for her character and we were all indecisive until she came out in this combination, which was later styled with jeans underneath the skirt.

While props and costumes are every important jobs and can make or break a film, they're not as time consuming as an actors role or director or lighting, therefore I offered to help create some fun content for the social media 'thegoldfish2025' on Instagram. On the final day of shooting, me and the rest of the costume department offered ourselves to help acting as assistants, carrying and managing equipment, being runners, and helping get things our director needed for shots such as dandelions.

'Because there is a certain degree of correlation between the actors' own images and their roles, it is also necessary to consider the actors' own physical characteristics, body proportions, temperament style and other factors when designing film and television costumes, so as to more accurately express the personality characteristics and spiritual outlook of the characters in the drama.' Yin, F. (2023).

This quote refers to the level of creative intent and research should be done into a character to correctly represent them on screen through their wardrobe. It also references the importance of the actor when dressing the character. This is why when my group investigated wardrobe for the characters, we also sent out a form for actors to fill in about sizing, any issues or allergies to fabrics or jewelry, and have begun to speak to them about how comfort in the ideas as well.

'If, for instance, a character has to use a chair in a scene, the chair is carefully selected according to the character’s emotional state and performance ambience. It cannot be any chair. It has to be the perfect chair for that particular character. This means that props are an extension of the character's personality because it is the prop that will give audiences subconscious cues that determine how or what to feel about a situation or character.' Ajibade, C. T. P. B., & Agbanu, V. N. (2021).

This is a perfect description of pow props can be essential to the story, especially with this script. Therefore, each decision needs to be carefully made, which is why the collaboration of the props group, and the director is imperative.
