In Jackie French's words, this book is 'a love story to Australia.' At its heart, it is about the land, the nation, and the people connected to it. In the story, a young girl of 12 (I think) called Matilda moves to the country after her city born- and-bred mother dies. She joins her father, who she hasn't seen since she was a baby. Once she meets him, they set off to earn money shearing sheep and working as swagmen. He shares a little of the lore of the land to Matilda, and they are starting their new life together. Then, a man and three policemen accuse her father of stealing a sheep, and his response is to jump into a nearby billabong to escape. He's unable to escape the pond weeds, and dies there. Sound familiar? This is the story of the song Waltzing Matilda, except this version includes the presence of the swaggie's daughter. However, this is barely the beginning of the story. It follows Matilda right through to her later adult years, showing her triumphs, defeats, and ultimately the growth that she experiences. She learns a lot, both in knowledge and emotional growth through the character Auntie Love, an Indigenous women who looks after a newly orphaned Matilda. She experiences second-hand racism against not only Indigenous Australians but also Asian immigrants. She works as a farmer and property manager, working in a male dominated industry at a time where sexism was rife, and is exposed to the disrespect that male shearers showed to a female boss. However, perhaps the most significant growth is in her connection to the land. She learns from Auntie Love how to read the seasons, respect the animals and the plants, and cope with everything from bushfires to floods. I love this story, and I thought that there were so many subtle but rich details that could only be discovered by re-reading it multiple times. The characters, the land, and the stories of both of these are so truly real and engaging. The sense of place is extremely well developed, and many authentic voices from our region are portrayed.
