Why The People of Ancient Greece Became Sea Traders by Mason Kinney

There are many reasons why the people of ancient Greece became sea traders. The first reason is from its landscape. Since mountains were very common throughout Greece, traveling goods was not easy. So, they adapted to their environment and traded on the water. The second reason is also part of Greece's landscape, but the land was not fertile to plant crops. Since this was a big problem, they resorted to fishing for their food supply. My final reason why the people of ancient Greece became fish traders is because of the how often they had sailed on the Mediterranean Sea. The people of Greece had learned how to sail on ships, making water travel easier. For these reasons, this is why the people of Greece became sea traders.

The anicent Greeks were sea traders. This is becuase they live on a penisula meaning they are surrouned by water. Greece is three-fourths mountains and has little to no fertile soil therefore the Greeks became dependent on the ocean. They became fishers, sailors, and merchants. The Greeks merchants had to compete with other traders from the mediterranean culture like the Phonenians. Other trader eagerly wanted to trade their goods for Greece's olive oil, wool, and wine.

The geography of Greece greatly impacted how they lived. For example they were next to the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This means they had a great way to trade by water. Also it was a great thing they lived near the ocean and sea because their soil was thin. This meant that they could only grow so many crops because of the soil. Another reason they could not grow a lot of different crops was because the summers were hot and dry while the winters were wet and windy. The crops they grew were wheat, barley, olives and grapes. The animals they raised were well suited to the environment. These include sheep, goats, and cattle.

Since mountains are common in Greece, it is difficult to travel and get goods. Second, the land is not good enough for farming some crops so they rely on sea food. i guess. Lastly, it is easier to do these things.

This makes it hard to do farming. Although they produce things like wine, olive oil, and wool. Those items were often times traded to get other things that they couldn't get in Greece. They began to use sea trade to get there needs and wants. Since it is on a peninsula sea trade, sailing, and fishing was often done. They would even go as far as Egypt to trade sometimes. Traveling this far on ship to trade isn't easy so they had to become experts at sailing. They began to rely on the sea for their trade.

The Greeks had farming experience but due to little to no fertile soil the Greeks had to find another way to grow or find food. Greece is also a peninsula so fishing and becoming sea trade would be the route. With dry and hot summers farmers did not produce large surpluses and travel across was difficult because of the dependence on the sea, however the Greeks did produce wine, wool, and olive oil. The Greeks became fishers, sailors, and merchants trading their goods. Greece is located on the eastern Mediterranean so they were in a great place for trading. In conclusion the Greeks sailors and Merchants were very skilled so they were able to reach all the way to ancient Egypt to trade their goods.
