To think: is there any object that may be related to imperialism? 

The Duveen Brothers was a firm of influential art dealers based in London, Paris, and New York from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. With Joseph Duveen (1869-1939) at the helm and the assistance of art experts, most notably Bernard Berenson (1865-1959), Duveen Brothers played a prominent role in the transfer of old master paintings, antique furnishings, and objets d'art from Europe to the United States.

A group of lifesize terracotta statues had been stolen and smuggled out of Italy.

The museum is also working with the Italian culture ministry to return four other relics, including three works bought in the 1970s and an 1881 oil painting by Camillo Miola called The Oracle, after research by scholars concluded the objects had also been illegally removed from Italy.

Walsh, the former museum director, said: “We all agreed -- and the acquisition policy is clear -- that nothing would justify buying an object that we knew or strongly suspected was stolen.”

• Some people collect bottle caps. Others collect rare ancient art. Collections can be seen as both worthless low-brow garbage and priceless high-brow art. For individuals their collections mean something to them, whether it is sentimental memories or part of their intellectual identity. Art collectors use their collections for various purposes. One of the most obvious reasons is for social status, but there are deeper intellectual and psychological factors that are behind the impulse of collecting art.
