Lily's childhood friend/boyfriend, and first love. Formerly homeless. Owner of Bib's resturant. Cooking and making food has been his passion throughout his entire life.

He was cast out of his family home. Lily saw someone living in the empty house across the street from her, and it was Atlas. She took care of him (She let him use their shower, and made him lots of food so that he would not be hungry, they even watched TV together - The Ellen Degeneres Show, Finding Nemo) and they became really close. After a while he went to the marines, Lily had not heard from him since. Because of this, she felt rather sad. She therefore, did not have him on her mind anymore, though what she did not know was that he had worked his entire life to be "good enough" for her. (Even though he already was good enough, he just did not see it.) And now finally, he was.

He is loving, caring and protective.

The book is written in first person perspective(Lilly B. Bloom) because of this, readers can more easily connect to the characters (especially Lily). This is because you can feel both her pain, when being in an abusive relationship, but also the love she has for Ryle when he is in a good period. so, you feel just as lost as the main character.

The story as a whole gets a lot more personal. The book would be completly different if written from an outside perspective, it would be rather boring and difficult to relate to, though when crating a first person perspective like this, you do the exact opposite.

"You can stop swimming now, Lilly. We finally reached the shore." - Atlas (page: 367)
He is referring to finding nemo (a speciall film for the two of them. - When they were teenagers they used to watch Finding Nemo, "Just keep swimming." is a reoccuring quote in this book). Though, what he means is that they can finally be together and Lily can stop worrying.

This fits well with another quote Lily says earlier in the book: "I'll keep pretending to swim, when really all i'm doing is floating. Barely keeping my head above water." - Lily (page: 60) This is in reference to when Atlas went to the Marines and Lily says until Atlas comes back for her, she will stop writing to "Ellen", because it hurts too much. This is the last time she wrote a diary entry. The fact that Atlas never came back for her hurt to the point where she tries to block him out of her memory (untill she reads her own diarys). The meaning behind the quote is rather obvious: she is hiding what is really going on and how she is really feeling , while on the inside she feels as though she can barely take it anymore.

Although she loves plants, she is scared her name (Lily Blossom Bloom) will make it seem unauthentic if she were to start a business (which she ends up doing).
Her passion for plants comes from how plants reward you with the care that is given them. "plants reward you based on the love you give them".

Lily rewards Atlas with her love for all the care that he showed her when they were teenagers and lily's home situation was not safe. Also, for when he continues to stand up for her when Ryle is abusing her.

Atlas himself has responded to Lily with enduring love out of the care that she showed him. Beyond that, Lily offers another view of plants: that while some plants need a lot of nurturing, some can thrive "just relying on themselves and nobody else".

Lily learned how to deal with abusive relationships, Ryle learned how to make a relationship last and how he should treat his girlfriend/wife, he also learned how his anger issues hurt the one he loves, and eventually breaks their relationship apart.

Ryle’s anger issues stem from when he was a kid and killed one of his brothers with a gun (unintentionally). This stayed with him throughout his life and ruined him (this is also why he is so outraged in the start of the novel - he had just dealt with a family where this exact same thing had happened). He didn’t know how to deal with it as a child and he still does not know how to deal with it. his only way of dealing with it is to get physical - this has obvious concequenses for the people around him, this is why he does not want a relationship in the first place but Lily convinses him. this is also why Lily does not want him as a father, she does not know if she can trust him.

She tells him she wants a divorce, he - as per usual - begs her not to, she says: "What would you do? if one of these days, this little girl looked up at you and she said, 'Daddy? My boyfriend hit me.' what would you say to her Ryle?" she goes on to name all the abuse he has done to her as if it was their "daugther" saying it - this makes him understand what he has done and the importance of them getting divorced. It is a rather heartbreaking end.

14.02.2018

Dear diary,

This is probably the last time you will ever hear from me. And before you get all sad, its not that bad, really, I will be fine. Nevertheless, at this point you are probably wondering “Atlas, whatever could have made you come to such a conclusion?” well, her.

I walk by their window every day, wishing it was me kissing her, loving her, touching her. I imagine what it must be like, waking up to those beautiful eyes looking straight to your soul. Stroking her soft auburn hair while she embraces you. They live straight across the street from my restaurant, Bib’s. There is this huge window in their living room which invites you to look straight into their lives. Now before you judge me, I did hesitate at first and went for weeks trying nothing but to ignore the window. This was until a couple of months ago where I felt as though I had to. What if Ryle was abusing her? Sure, he had “quit” and “become a better person”, but anyone can say that. Right? So, I peeked.

It turned into my daily routine. Every day I see them getting happier, more compassionate and falling deeper and deeper in love. What they don’t know is that every day I get one step closer. I have not felt this way since high school – I had hoped I would never have to feel this way again, but here we are. What makes it worse this time is that it is MY fault. I let her go. I did not fight hard enough. I did not want to destroy their family. And I mean, how could I? even though, yes, I would probably - no – definitely, make a much better father and husband, I just could not split up their family.

I didn’t tell anyone I was leaving; I don’t know what I would have told them – or if I would be able to lie. If I had told them the truth they would have wanted to “help” me and take me to a hospital. But really, that’s not what I want. I went back to Maine yesterday; I could not get myself to go to the house, so I waited until today. All the memories flushing back at such a speed. I was looking back at when I almost ended it all and to be honest, I would not have missed out on much. I was alone then, I’m alone now. The only difference is back then I still had a hope that I would end up with her – she was my motivation, but now, she has left me with nothing. I am not too mad at her though, it’s not her fault she fell for Ryle, but she fell for me first. I was her first love, I know that. Now, how could she just give that up?

Lily, if you are to ever read this, know that I always loved you and don’t blame you, I am glad you are happy. Besides, this is where I am meant to be. This is home.

In this novel we get to read Lily's diarys which she wrote when she was younger. She thought writing diarys was rather cliche and awkward so, she decided to dedicate each of them to Ellen Degeneres.

We get to read about all Atlas and her's time together, as well as her father's abusive episodes. Because of this, we get a much better understanding of how this impacted Lily - rather than if the book did not include the diarys.

The novel is written by Colleen Hoover (published on August the 2nd in 2016). It's genres are romance and contemporary romance.

It is inspired by a real story, on the first page it says: "For my father, who tried his very best not to be his worst. And for my mother, who made sure we never saw him at his worst." Although she has said that not all of the parts were completly true, it still makes the story all the more interesting and heartbreaking.
