What is transmission when it comes to music?

What I interpret transmission in music is how the performer puts emotion into the notes and how the listener perceives the music. It could be different than how the composer intended it to be because different musicians have different emotions. I agree with Ratliff when he says that transmission is how the musician puts their own emotions into the music because they are the ones performing, not the composers. They can play what every they feel when performing.

Andy Bey's The Other Half of Me

In this song, I can hear and almost feel the emotions that Andy Bey is feeling. The way he his playing the piano, slow and emotional, makes me feel calm and relaxed. By listening to his voice and his words, I can just about feel the and sadness loneliness he is feeling. This is a great example of how transmission affects the way music is perceived. It feels like he sings his emotions instead of the notes and words.

One example from my own personal library is Eminem's Headlights. In this song, Eminem's step brother is featured. Its a song about asking forgiveness from their mother and how they were wrong to treat her the way they did. I can feel Nate Ruess's sadness and almost regret that he feels for treating his mother like that. Eminem raps is such a way like he's almost mad at himself and asks for his mothers forgiveness. The way the piano and background chorus accompany the singer and rapper make me feel like they poured their hearts and souls into this song.

"There's a thing some singers do: they go transparent in their voices." - Ratliff Every Song Ever pg 49. When people just talk, they kind of don't show who their truly are. But when they sing a song that makes them feel emotional, they show their true selves, they become transparent.

Post Malone's live performance

This is a video I found on youtube of Post Malone performing his song, I Fall Apart. He sings very shakily as if he was about to 'fall apart' and he begins to almost sound angry at some points. From what I understand, the lyrics are about how someone broke his heart. His singing truly adds the emotion to the lyrics and almost puts me in his position.

"But there is an extreme form of emotion in music that transcends specific moods" Ben Ratliff Every Song Ever pg 54. Music can be sung and played in many different ways, even if they are the same song and same notes. The singer can use their tone to make the song happy, sad, or angry. It all depends on how the singer feels about the songs and how they feel that the time of singing.
